  • Keira Witherkay .."live video" from Pta solo gig ...last week

here's a clip from a gig i did last week 19th in Pretoria...weather was horrid....thunder and lightning ...like right above us..... so i decided against using my ZT amp and used my battery powered rig ..to avoid any electrical mishaps... during the storm ..... , which means if the power gets shorted out in the storm the show goes on thanks to the battery's and also i don't stand to get my gear or myself 'fried" by a surge .....so the show went on .... and a good time was had by all ...

i should have put on the low frequency cut on the camera... but i didn't .... the sound is bassier than it was in the room ..... although at the moment my tone is pretty dark

the gig is me solo.... so everything you hear is me ..even the percussion ....... i'm part of the 100% live music movement ...so no backtracks....

also the guitar i'm playing is a vintage yamaha As50 ( a gem of a jazz guitar ronnie from all bang and strummit sourced for me ) thru a 2x12 cab (fender speakers from a vintage 60's 4x12 cab i aquired) ) but powered by a 40w battery solid state amp .... the sound in the video is for some reason bassier than it was in the room but hey it's a live clip ......... "warts and all" and the song is the amazing jazz standard "Misty"

it's all improv... i have learnt the basic structure and melody but change the song every performance to suit my mood .... i just have fun with the tune and see what happens on the night .......to me it keeps my gigs interesting (for me ...and hopefully for others too )

if you enjoyed the clip there is more on my youtube site (just search for me on you tube)

    Really enjoyed that...
Those guys in the background didn't know what they were missing.

Is it just me or is it harder to play slow?

thanks..... As to the question ..... I think its slightly easier to hide any lack of feel .... Emotion by playing fast .... But once you can play well.... Tempo , however fast or slow is much the same skill ability.... Its about emotion and communicating that that to the audience in how you play .....

I always tell my students that a beginner player and a pro muso if they learn a piece play mostly the same notes .... But what sets them apart is how they play and feel / interpret the piece ....
Brilliant as usual! I owe you CDs!!!

I was one of those guys in the background ?

It was a great set. My friends and I regularly stopped eating mid-swallow to pay better attention to what was being played and sigh mournfully upon reflecting on our own musical abilities... It was really inspiring to see a pro go to work ?
