Apologies for posting the competition entries so late but I was really expecting the world to have come to an end by 12:00pm 12/12/12... Ja well anyway here are the entries for the African Competition. Members get 1 vote each to be in by 21/12/12 ... or not maybe not if you, like me think those Mayan dudes where a bit dyslexic.

Put some super lights on my Ibanez Talman acoustic, didn't like them innitially.
But got to feel them. Came up with the Klopse thing around the braai one night.
Shirley and Rock were out of town so had to go with my brother and his ipod touch for the production. So Merry Christmas and a very happy tweede nuwe jaar.

I'm so sorry I missed the deadline. I assuredly checked the challenge page only to keep seeing the 16th Dec pop up which I assumed was the cut off date. It just goes to show one should always finish reading the entire thing. This was completely my mistake. I hope I have not forfeited my entry, if so, I'm fine if people don't vote for me per se, I'm happy just to have them listen to my work. I'm quite proud of it.

Wait? Mine is complete. I'm completely sorry for missing the deadline, for some stupid reason I thought it was the 16th of Dec. Argggg. Stupid me. Can I still submit?
Norman86
hmmm... interested to hear if it wil be allowed... i hope it will!
FruitarGeek
Well I have sent to Rene. Lets just hope its not too late
Renesongs
No worries man I also though I had set the 16th as the deadline 8)

What? Only 3 entries? Had a listen to to others. I like the Adrians Afro-Jazz/Latin vibe with a tinge of Parissiene Walkways thrown in. Hammeron, it takes some balls to send a raw acoustic-only track and on top of it a "Boeremusiek" idea. Respek! Only thing is, the tuning sounded a bit out when you play a D, or was it a case of those "Metal"-fingers gripping the neck to tightly?
Adrian gets my vote. Nice playing there man.
Norman86
brilliant stuff guys! damn... gotta pray to the spirits for guidance on this one!
Hammeron
Yea, put new light strings on and the one was being beligerent on the tuning front. Went for a busker, blikgitaar, street kind of feel, which wasn't too difficult to achieve with the incredibly advanced recording equipment I was presented with!
Well done guys, nice one!

Great entries all. My favorites, sorry Tamla, were Arno and Adrian's tracks. Being as Arno's was first I was thinking oh this is good.....a few performance issues here and there, the vibe/groove slipping in a few places and some notes that seemed a bit off.....but overall I was thinking, this really nails the African sound and I liked that you held out for the full 2mins....ballsy. Without even hearing a note from anyone else, I thought yours was going to be hard to beat. Until I heard Adrian's. For me I think he pips you at the post but only ever so slightly. If these two were different ability levels......you know the old Intermediate and Advanced thingy...... I'd have voted them both 1st in class.
I think for me, the vocals in Adrian's really helped but it was the guitar melody that pushed me over, especially the phrasing and placement. Very nice. Adrian get's my vote. Although.....you are way out there Arno.......pulling away from the field. Nice work.
Tamla....the bad tuning spoiled it for me.....I am sorry. Nice idea and as always a ballsy move from you to go solo...... and acoustic no less. You did good, just watch those super light strings. You just cannot bang on them. Especially not on a box. The only thing you can do if you are going for a particularly light sound is to use a super thin plectrum.
Good try young lady and even more kudos to you for participating.......when so many others, myself included......wussed out.

Arno for me - it just nails most aspects I expect to hear for the genre, and is tightly played besides (bar a little looseness here and there, which I expect from a challenge entry). The lead guitar is probably the least African of everything. Nicely arranged for the genre too.
Adrian's is close though. The vocals are a nice touch as is the kalimba/mbira riff. It falls down a bit on some of the timing though.
Tamla, the tuning also killed it for me and it also suffered from a little heavy handedness. But you definitely have the beginnings of something there.
Hammeron
Hey Highway, was wondering where you'd got to! Thanks for the ups guys, yea, the lights are pretty new to me for sure.
FruitarGeek
Arno got my vote. Reason being is that his track was true to the theme and it put a smile on my face all the way through, an element which is lost in some of the challenges.
Hammeron, I actually thoroughly enjoyed your track, it too had its African elements. I hope to see you compete more often

yowzer. okay, so my comments go thusly:
arno - a really cool motif introduced early, repeated through the piece, my ears just missed a melody developing on top of it. nonetheless, most massive indeed.
hammeron - this was a puzzler for me. couldn't quite figure out what to do with it. but then i realised something about it; it felt incredibly familiar. i could imagine myself walking along any city street and coming across someone playing this on a gtx guitar - or in any village for that matter. it's brave in that respect.
adrian - awesome stuff. this is a really spectacular blend of african elements - the vocals, the guitar work, the percussive elements, all come together really nicely.
my vote will be going to one person i believed hammered the brief on the head, despite not being, perhaps, the most polished performance. or, in fact, probably precisely because of it.

Hammeron all the way! You were braver than I in submitting a one track wonder - well done - being 'out of tune' on some of the chords...that's south african enough for me, especially having listened to Kaapse Kloppe stuff after midnight (like buying snoek after sunset, it is advised against ?)
Arno's and Adrian's are up to their usual high standards - quite african indeed (Arno's nailed all the elements I'd expect to hear in a South African production).
Good stuff from all!

I voted before Adrian's track was submitted.
After listening to Arno and Hammeron's tracks only once and not trying to analyse things but just go with my first impressions;
I went for Arno's more "smooth" sound which still incorporated an "African" feel.
The out of tune portions on Hammeron's track did put this behind Arno's.
Hey it's easy to criticise, good on you for entering and hopefully I can "put my money where my mouth is" for the next challenge and actually enter something. :-[
Adrian's sound could be considered the more "African" sounding track.
Luckily I had already voted- Man, it would be a tricky decision to have to decide between Arno and Adrian's tracks.
if there has to be a tie break maybe Arno - he followed the brief in all respects, including the 2 minutes.

Fortunately the Mayans were wrong and we all live to survive another Doomsday prophecy . Arno is the man on this one. Could you PM your topic choice to me for January 2013 when you hove a moment. 8)

Done. Hope it went through.

Alan, any chance of getting that update on the Hall of Fame?
