Having had the opportunity to play a couple of Les Paul's I find myself in the exact same boat as Mr. Cleric right now, and I think I've made enough progress to finally warrant getting a decent guitar to replace my little Pacifica. Alas, I don't have the cash to splurge on a traditional Gibson LP, so what are the alternatives? I've had a look at Vintage, Tokai and Epiphone and thus far the Tokai LS-forgot-which-one seems to make me happiest in the pant area. What do you guys think? I don't really have a set budget, I know myself well enough to know that once I fall in love with something logic, restraint and common sense just pulls down the blinds and has a lie-down ?
Also, where in the blue hells can I find either a MSRP list for Tokai's or online retailer who sells them? My Google-Fu failed miserably.
Thanks in advance ?
From what I've read on this forum, that Pacifica sounds like a decent guitar in it's own right and it might be worth considering
adding a guitar to your collection (even if that means you have to save for longer) rather than replacing it. That'll give you strat-type sounds as well as the LP stuff.
Ah, I seem to have typed a load of crap there. I don't want to sell my lil' Pacifica quite yet, I'll probably see what I can do to upgrade it in the future. I just really, really want a guitar with different shape, tone, a fixed bridge and two humbuckers ?

Well, do you want something that looks like a Les Paul, or something with 2 humbuckers that is a step up from your current axe? If the latter then head for your music shop of choice (and a couple of others) and test drive some Ibanii, some higher-up-the-food-chain Yamahas, any Music Mans hanging around and anything else in that general ball park. If nothing else this will help you sharpen your thinking about what you want.
Also consider good condition 2nd hand equipment - you get more bang per buck that way.
I've tried the Ibanii and the rest, they just don't satisfy. Just everything about the LP feels and sounds
right to my biased and probably clouded mind. But I will admit I am very swayed by the looks of a Les Paul, if it had a pulse, I'd marry it.
And this one has been making eyes at me all week...

EDIT: I should probably add that that one is a little bit out of my budget ☹
