Something has been bothering me for some time. Can the pooled wisdom of the community enlighten me. There must be someone who is privy to the answer here.
On the side or the top of buildings in Cape Town I see these prism shaped devices that are mounted in such a way that they revolve slowly and
send out a reflective flash of light every now and then. I have asked various people and no-one that I know seems to have any ideas.
They are all over the place. I dont know what powers them but the revolve constantly.
We have them on our Civic Center building too up here in Kempton. My initial thought was that it may be some form of day time anti-collision warning system, seen as the airport is pretty close by. I'd be keen to know what purpose they actually serve though...
i've heard, and this is quite a good one, in war times planes land on roads and highways, so these things act as guides so that they don’t hit the buildings.

it can't be birds surely? i mean thats a bit of an expensive solution to a fairly menial problem. there must be something scientific involved.

        oh.. thats boring.
That is boring. Liked UFO beacons more. ?

It is quite amazing though. Never thought I'd find the answer on the guitar forum... ???
Well.....the real answer to this is....they are UFO beacons indeed. This is suppose to be top secret and everyone on the City Council will deny its real use. The Cape astronomers have (since contact with ET's on Devils Peak in the 90's) tried to make contact with intelligent beings in the Andromeda Galaxy. During late 2010 the technology has developed into a viable option for gamma-detectors (and beacons) for extra-terrestials. Those devices are still in an experimental phase however.
