Hey guys

Our bassist bought a second-hand Ashdown EB 180 Head, like this one:

That was about three months ago.

When we tested the amp it sounded great! We took it to practice, and we were really impressed with how loud it
plays and how nice the tone was.

Then we played a gig, and while driving home the amp fell face down from his back seat.

Then at the next practice it still sounded good, but only for about 10 minutes...
That's where the problem started. Regardless of how you set it, the amp distorts. Also, it's as if the volume isn't as
loud as it should be. Initially his input level knob was turned to about 10:00, and his master the same. That was loud enough.
Now, he has to turn both up to about 15:00, and even then the analog needle isn't moving much.

We sent the amp away to a Audio & Visual technincian I know, and he tested it and sent it back saying he could find no fault with
the unit. Then, we used it again, and sure, it sounded great! Again only for about 10 minutes. We sent it back to him a second time,
and the same thing happened. Then, last week we decided to send it to Paul Bothners, coz they are experts with instrument amps.

Now we got a call saying it's working fine. We don't know what to do. Any ideas what could cause an intermittant fault like this?

Please guys, any advice will be greatly appreciated...

Sounds like a temperature related thing.....As the amp warms up things expand and change.

There might be a hairline crack in the PC board somewhere and when the amp is cold all is well.
As the amp warms up the crack causes a break in the cct somewhere and the amp fails....

Could also be a capacitor somewhere failing for the same reason......

My suggestion is to get a repair facility soak test the amp on a bench with pink noise and see what happens after 10 minutes...
If the amp fails one then used a freezer spray on the components one at a time until the fault is found.....
