here's how it looks at the moment. i have a vox ac4-tv, really cool li'l amp. also two tokais - sg88 (lekka sg, growls and squeals nicely depending on what you ask it to do), and an ls95s, a beauty gold top. also a prs custom 22 which i was going to offload a while back, but i luckily regained my senses in the nick of time. various pedals, and my larrivee, which doesn't enter into this discussion.

here's the issue. i want to pick up a low-end (see what i did there?) bass (epiphone thunderbird, entry-level cort, something like that), and maybe a les paul, probably a tokai. the sg is lovely, but the les paul shape and sound really does suit me better. i made a pact with myself that i wouldn't use other money to finance the ol' gas - only the proceeds of selling off gear.

question is - what would you do? i'm definitely thinking of selling the sg, there's also a possibility of the gold top being gone in the bundle. there's also an outside chance of the vox leaving in favour of something with a clean channel, although i do believe there's a lot more exploratory work to be done with that amp.

just your thoughts - if you were in my shoes...

Well, technically I am in your shoes because I'm planning more or less the same thing here. Ask yourself: "Will I regret selling this in five years?" Make a list of the things you want to sell and whatever you want to pick up. List the pro's and cons of each. I'd sell the SG and pick up a Tokai LP (since that's the first thing you mentioned wanting to sell). I'm not sure about the rest, if you like it, hang onto it. As for the bass, entry-level Cort basses are cool. Here's one tip: If you're thinking of selling gear, hide it out of view for a month (whether you put it in a case, under a bed, in a closet, etc), if you have no urge to take it out during that month, sell it.
Two potentially expensive options are buying the bass and selling the amp. Either way you're going to find yourself wanting at least one more amp. Unless you want a pukka Les Paul that says "Gibson" on the headstock, just sell the SG88 and then look around to see what sort of decent-ish bass and bass amp you can get with the proceeds.

Or think about it a lot and having thought just keep things as they are.
You're obviously not going the collecting route, so you have to be ruthless - especially when you get to the point where you have some really good items whose only fault is that they do not suit your current needs. Just ask yourself: "do I use it?" and "will I still use it if I get XXX?". If the answer to either is "No", sell it and buy stuff you will use.

neat approach. now all i have to do is figure out what 'XXX' is. i also like the idea of putting them away for a month - but if that was the case the prs would be the first to go and i'd be able to afford to indulge my every immediate gas whim. although i've been down that path before, and i know i'd miss it in 5 years' time. heck, i'd miss it the day i sold it.

thanks for your help gents. i think i'm going to sell the sg, much as i enjoy it, also the vox, and use the proceeds to finance a new amp and a tokai lp, probably something with a quilted top. and i'll save up a few months for a bass - at that level, it'll only take a couple of months, four or five at the outside.

probably. oh, but the possibilities are endless...

Yup - hard to do sometimes though. I've sold quite a few wonderful guitars that I loved but didn't play for some reason. Sometimes they lurk around for a year or two - I know they are not going to be used, but can't bear to part with them too quickly and hang on in the vain hope that one day I'll pick it up and we'll just "click".
I have never sold any gear and not regretted it somewhere down the line. On the other hand I am a big supporter of the "sell my mid-range masses and get a hi-end item" mindset. I would rather own 1 USA Strat or Les Paul than 15 lesser pieces. I say flog em all, get 1 good axe and 1 decent amp and a cheap 2nd hand bass. You will feel a different player/person when sporting something with the words Fender or Gibson on the headstock. I know, I do.
But if you have an LS95 which is the japanese made tokai LP why are you selling stuff to get a LP...I mean you already have a top quality one...

                  GAS has no reason ?
If your looking for a "low end" bass i would suggest you check out the made in china Fender Modern Player range... Great value for money, i think at about R5K for the Fender jag its not much higher than the epiphone t-bird and i would say it blows away anything in the same price range

I had this type of thing, where I decided to let go of the Crafter Hybrid. Advertised in Junkmail, then put it one side and played my Cort acoustic and SX Strat only...then the other day (about a month later) and couldn't believe that I was contemplating selling it...
I've got a SG like yours and I think you're mal to sell it. But I'll keep an eye for your ad hey. And good choice on the Tokai LP I reckon. Funny thing, and maybe it's becasue I havent been listening, that I dont hear people talking about G&L around here.

Good point. They are great guitars by all accounts and part of Leo Fender's heritage, but you just don't see them around much. Maybe I should try get to see a few to try.

Keep the PRS and Goldtop Tokai ....sell off all the other stuff and get yourself a nice amp and Fx pedal/s. The PRS delivers humbucker and single coil tones....the Goldtop has a good set of P90's...and it's a great Les Paul -type guitar with great P90 tone as well....so you're covered tonewise ...what more do you want ? .....Why do you want a bass guitar and a low end one for that matter...one that you will also probably sell off later.....?

the prs and the goldtop are definite keepers. between the two of them i guess i really do have pretty much everything i need - you make a strong argument. the only thing i really want to get is a two-channel amp, but i'm happy to wait on that until just the right thing comes along. the reason i want the bass is i don't like 'programmed' bass on my songs, and i'm at the stage where i want to put my stuff down. so to be able to track live bass and guitars just adds a cool dimension.

i like your thinking vic thanks

Don,t sell the SG,rather add another guitar, more sonic possibilities at the end of the day,I also own a SG and will never let it go,it,s a very versatile guitar..
