  • Anyone plan on seeing OMD at Emperor's Palace?

I'm usually weary of bands who have more former members than current or original members so OMD has fallen off my radar some years ago. However, I notice that the current ensemble that will be performing at Emperor's Palace on 4&5 Aug is the original four members.

Seeing as they formed a key part of the soundtrack to my youth (the 80's) I'm half considering that it might be worth it. Only problem is they're a bunch of old farts now so I'm not really sure what to expect.
Nothing wrong with old farts. I've seen bands with plenty of grey hair (and not just at TJ's). Energy levels can be quite satisfactory and skills can remain sharp. So that's not a problem.

The thing with acts with a long career is that the fans want to hear all the hits but the band/artist might be more keen on playing the new stuff. If you haven't kept up with them then you might be in for a good chunk of unfamiliar music. Again this doesn't HAVE to be a problem - it depends on what you want. If you want the soundtrack to your youth then maybe you want to see if you can find some set lists on line.

Yeah, been thinking about it but haven't got round to getting tickets yet - they were the first live band I ever saw when they played the Standard Bank arean probably in the very early nineties. Actually gave their latest album a listen the other day and doesnt sound like they have 'aged' (although they are probably close to their 60s now).
I actually have a DVD of them shot in 2007. They were very professional and the music sounded pretty much like it always did. As its mostly keyboard based, I think its easy to play irrespective of energy levels! The singing was still good, though Andy's energy levels were perhaps a bit too high - making it cheesy here and there. But by and large, I thought it was quite good. The Crush-era stuff sounded better to me on the DVD than I remembered them from the 80s.

I am extremely biased against electronic music but IMO, OMD had/have the ability to evoke realheartfelt feelings with their music - for me Talking Loud And Clear is an example. I am envious that you guys get all of these opportunities!
