Hi folks!

I started off playing the piano in school as I took music as a subject, but once I finished school, I bought myself a second-hand Yamaha acoustic and got hooked.
I've been playing on and off for about 18 years now but tend to be more of a rhythm guitarist than anything else. I really love playing. And buying guitars
My current collection consists of the above-mentioned Yamaha (FG-something), an Ibanez electric (Blazer BL300), an Epiphone nylon string, a Takamine acoustic (TNV-460SC), and a MIM Standard Fender Strat (my newest baby).

I play a fairly wide variety of music from alternative to rock to pop. And I have a friend with a fantastic singing voice, so I also do some backing for female vocal music.

I look forward to learning, sharing and shooting the breeze with you guys and gals ?
welcome, post pics of your stuff!
      You are very welcome!! :goodtimes:

I'll post pics of my other guitars soon.
          Hi. Nice guitars.

P.S. Better to start a thread under "Your Gear" to showcase your guitars and gear. Everyone loves the eye candy... ?

Will do. Sorry, I'm new to this :-[
              No need to be sorry!

Your gear will get more views and appreciation there. ?

Has "5D" got anything to do with Canon cameras? ?

Haha, I was about to ask the same question ?

But yes, welcome to the forums. I love the look of that Takamine of yours. I'm sure Squonk will approve.

                    Some suggestions:
Sounds like you've got a nice collection of guitars there. Why don't you head over to the YOUR Gear section and show them off?
If you have any recordings of your stuff, do share. There's a section Clips For Review where you can do that.
We have a monthly challenge where members record a little ditty with a new theme every month. Go check that out under Competitions if you feel like chipping in. You've missed this month's (unless you still feel like recording something and submitting it before midnight tonight ?) but check it out. It's good fun and if you say that you play a wide variety of music, you'll fit right in.
Finally, I see your location is Johannesburg. It's a big place and, depending on where exactly you are, you might want to check out one of the open mic nights or such. There's one tomorrow night at TJ's in Emmarentia, there's an occasional one in Centurion and there's one coming up in Pretoria at the end of the month.

Thanks for the warm welcome, guys! ?

Actually 5D just stands for "fifth dimension", nothing to do with electronics of any kind

Deefstes, thanks for all the info. Much appreciated.
I'll try to post some pics in the Your Gear section soon, maybe after this weekend.

I think me saying that I've been playing for 18 years implies that I'm a pretty decent guitarist! Unfortunately, most of those years were spent playing once in a while without much improvement in my skills ☹ But I've started playing again more actively since I got my Tak and Strat, so there's some improvement happening ? The point of me saying all this is that I don't see myself playing at any open mic nights just yet, but you've given me something to aim at!

The point of open mic nights, is that you don't need to be a star player, you just have to want to do it. I usually attend the open mic night at Marks Park (last Thursday of the month, every month except December) to either watch or play, and it's not about virtuosity. There's a friendly core audience there, and it's in a small, cosy room.

It's a good way to improve or to break out of ruts. It's a fun way to bring on your playing and your confidence in your playing. It gives you something to aim at, will give you some idea of your strengths and weaknesses.

So... last thursday in August. Or September. Pick a target, figure out a little set for yourself (where I go it's 15 minutes max, but you can play a shorter set if you wish). Now you're practising towards an end goal - which makes a difference.
