Is that another question? It ends on a question mark alright but I think I'll rather leave it unanswered ?

One question. People seem to have NAAIS drum / bass tracks for their entries. What does the rules say about these?
I assume its OK to make your own using whatever software i.e. you actually build the tracks from single drum samples?
Is it OK to use preset drum tracks from, say, EZ Drummer? This is A LOT easier than the above scenario, but it costs money.
If this is OK, is it OK to use someone else's drum backing track and add bass/guitars/vocals?
Where do we draw the line? We're not allowed more than 4 tracks and we're not allowed to use someone else's backing track nor are we allowed covers. We are, now, given 120s to make the track. These last bunch of rules are clear but I think the official rules regarding backing tracks have become blurred (at least in my mind)

ez: plagiarism is not allowed as far as I know. So the backing track has to be your own. ezdrummer uses presets of patterns which fall into the 140 (or so) rudiments of drumming, so this is acceptable. If you are maybe referring to a pad created by someone else, I'm sure that is ok. But a full on track with drums and bass and keys or whatever... nope. That would be plagiarism.
4 tracks allows you drums, bass, either two guitars or 1 guitar and keys or one banjo and yelling neighbours... vocals are free.

IMO a drum kit , kick, snare, cymbals, toms et al are considered 1 instrument or track because it can be played by one person. Using a non propriety drum beats of 2, 4, 8 or even 12 bars is permissible, but lifting the drum track from someone else song is not OK. The same goes for other instrument samples bass, keys, brass strings as long as they are non propriety. I will add that though that what may be permissible will not shield you from general scorn of your fellow forumites. Let good taste be your guide.

Its only plagiarism if its not acknowleged as someone elses.
I'm talking about using a drum only track from somewhere on the webs, maybe some creative commons sharing site or similar.
I would argue that using a drumtrack that someone else made is as much your own work as using an EZ drummer preset or using some other software that given tempo and style and groove give you a reasonable track. I'm lazy and I dont feel like sitting and telling a piece of software exactly when to hit the snare and the tom and the bass drum. Thats boring as hell anyway. Unfortunately its is the nature of these current comps to strongly favour better-produced tracks. So I'm looking for a time saver basically. I'm busy but want to enter the comps. I dont want to spend money on them and I dont want to sit for hours to make drum tracks. I'm here for guitar, not drums yet if I don't do drums I'm at a distinct disadvantage.

^ In that case, use the track... cos it really wont be any different. As long as you don't use the backing track to "Shine on you crazy diamond" (you know, like all the instruments n stuff... though you might get away with it if we're drunk) , you're safe ?

not as if I identified a track i CAN use. Im just inquiring about the rules.
I would suggest banning all instruments but guitar bass and voice anf those must be real as played / sung by you. But that wont fly so I wont ?
and im not talking about using a full backing track, just drums, like you get from ez drummer.

Voters should enforce the rules! I have often excluded from my ruminations tracks that exceed the time limit. Even if I like the track. Lately I've taken to counting instruments. If there are obviously more than four then, again, that track doesn't get my vote. If the challenge is "monster metal riff" and somebody enters a piece of reggae then, sorry, no vote even though the track may in itself be very good.

Just a question on the 4 instruments rule... If I double/quad track my guitars, does that mean I have already used 2/4 instruments?
So if I submit my entry like this, would it be alright?
Rhythm guitar (double tracked)
Lead guitar (double tracked)
Bass
Drums
