No HP, but a system of leasing right ? the situation is the same more or less, u buy you pay on a monthly basis.
The Captain here is still the finest there is ........
Good stuff folks.
Tamla, I am amazed you are still in High School. I figured you to be college age at least.
We obviously have credit etc regular loans through banks or finance companies, credit union's etc leasing yada yada just like everywhere.....but not what I knew or remember as HP. HP did not used to have compounding interest. They simply added on the yearly interest up front to the item being financed and divided the resulting total by the term, in months. Well that's how I remembered it when I bought stuff. One fixed payment per month and the total came down without any fees or more interest being added on. Very simple.
As far as SA being #1 etc.......I'm not going to argue with you about that. There is no coming home for me though. I miss the place and a big part of my heart is there really. You can leave Africa but it never leaves you. But you know....I left a long time ago with the aim to crack it here in the USA. Still aiming.......... ? :'( ......... ?.....but seriously, I got married and had two children, very late in life and am now very entrenched in life here. My roots are down deep and this is home now. But yes, I still get homesick and I miss all the characters in my extended family. South African's are a very different bunch.
But hey....if they re-elect that jackass Obummer, I may have to get the eff out of here.
As far as a maid. Even when I was just making out on my own and I lived in an apartment I had a daily maid. Later when I rented a house with a girlfriend, we had a live in maid and I paid the going rate which was about R35 a week. I provided room and board...furnished servant's quarters and groceries etc, uniform blah blah with a paid vacation each year. She cooked, cleaned, did laundry, helped raise my girlfriend's daughter and generally took care of everything for us. At todays scheme of things, R200 a day still seems very reasonable if they are doing all that. It's such a huge burden off a working couple especially with children.
Folks.... good posts........ I am getting a laugh out of some of it.

Desperate times calls for desperate measures...if under severe fiancial strain I'v drunk Brandy and Oros...
Question nr 2 was never completely answered. If you want a fistfight just go to the lead guitarist of the band playing in any pub and say: "You play well for a blind guy..."
Or visit Bronkhorstpruit...I was in school on the East Rand for two years, then completed matric in Bronkies. Drink, fight and copulate...the only entertainment in town...

LOL.....no I will pass on the fisticuffs, thanks. I just remembered how there always seemed to be the distinct possibility of a barney in some of the more.... "quaint" shall we say, bars in Durbs and Joeys. The usual friendly introduction was ..............Nitebob wrote:

"what the f**k are you looking at hey? Is this your shirt I'm wearing?" ??? :-\
That's usually when I ran! ?
Nah just kidding, other than my time in the armed forces, after high school I had no troubles in SA life. Cruised through life quite peacefully. Air Force was a different story but thankfully I only had to deal with assholes while in basic. After I mustered in as a firefighter, I actually enjoyed myself a whole hell of a whole lot......and stayed half-baked for most of the time I was there. Fully baked the rest of it. ?
I also ran...to the car to get my pickaxehandle... ?Highway Chile wrote:Nitebob wrote:

Aah beloved "John Deeres". Got me through my student years, them and papsak and guava juice. I still do enjoy a cane and coke every now and then.Donovan Banks wrote: I have mates who drink Cane and Creme soda (or Sparberry)
Ever tried a Creme Soda overseas? It's horrible.
Fixed. ?Luc wrote:

i tried a cane & coke again a while back - was surprised to find i really enjoyed it & have had a couple more since....]
i don't think i'll be doing the cane & black label thing again tho (what was that called) - horrible, horrible memories of polishing of a bottle of cane using a dozen black labels as mixers while doing national service on the border.............didn't move from bed or eat for 3 days afterwards.......

I had a very bad experience getting absolutely shitfaced drinking cane when I was about 17 or 18 and was never able to tolerate even the smell of it after that.
Do you guys get Jim Beam and Jack Daniels freely around SA? I like Jim straight up with ice.
I'm not much of a drinker anymore since I quit all my evil ways about 14 years ago. I have a bottle of Vodka permanently in the freezer though. Absolut. Every once in a while if I feel the need to take the edge off I might take a shot and wash it down with some OJ. Very rare though.
If we throw a party or go to one, to be sociable I will partake of one or several Corona's. Lime in the better. MUST be ice cold. I cannot tolerate warm beer for a second.

Yip, Jack Daniels is available in probably all bottle stores or pubs. Jim Beam I am not to sure, last time I had it was a few years back, but it was definately available here at a stage. Probably still is though.
Jim Beam White, Black, Aged, even...
flavoured. Also Wild Turkey, Jack Single Barrel etc, Makers Mark and more. Hell, they're even at the Woolies liquor store ?
