Hi , i have a student who wants to buy a fender amp , to go with a custom shop strat so no debate on other amps , it must be an all tube fender ,
so at moment he has narrowed it down to a fender princeton reissue or a supersonic , so i'm a huge princeton fan but know absolutely nothing about a supersonic, and so the question is if you had to choose , which one and why , also any pro's and con's of supersonic you know of,
price is not the issue as he has good discounted quotes on both
so between the two what you think ? And why
thanks in advance to all offering opinion

I think the Super Sonic is one of the best amps they currently produce, IMO. It has a great drive channel. I would have bought one when I bought my deluxe, but it was a bit more than I wanted to spend, after some thought.

It does look very cool. I would guess he's keen on the 22?
Looks like a great amp, but there's lots of solid-statey stuff in there.. So its not all tube - whatever implications that has.
I'd probably play them next to each other and decide, but my bet is on the supersonic and to try find a vintage Princeton ?

Yes it's the 22w super sonic he's looking at
aja
Some reviews I have read on the supersonic have said that it tries to do too many things at once and does each thing with average tone, nothing stellar.
I guess he would have to compare the two side by side...

The Deluxe Reverb ?
IceCreamMan
What are his intentions with the amp?
off the top of my head the princeton comes with a 10' speaker and that is -1 in my books.
nice position to be in though , dayum ,wish i had the coin to be in this quandry ☹

I've not had any experience with the Princeton, but the Supersonic is a very very good amp.
Locally, i've heard Gorm Helfjord (many Kaapies will know him) play one that was just phenomenal.

Don't know if I'm too late. I've got an older 60 watt version of the Super Sonic.
Absolutely awesome amp, the cleans are as amazing as any Fender tube amp you'll come across. The gain channel is great, not the best, but does it's job well. Make sure he gets the 22 watt version unless he's playing arena's.
I don't think he'll look back on it if he gets it ?

Am I the only one who doesn't think the SuperSonic is anything special? ☹

It's not anything special, but it's quite versatile in comparison with other Fender amps in my opinion.
What do you suggest? As I'm interested in hearing (not being sarcastic)

It's definitely versatile, and it's definitely good value for money, which I guess some people like. ? My personal opinion is that about 90% of players will leave it on one setting for almost everything, so versatility isn't really as big as people often make out. If you want a modern Fender tone in that wattage range what else IS there but the Deluxe Reverb? My 2 cents..

And even so, Andy from PGS has shown us that a Deluxe Reverb with a pedal or two is pretty versatile.

Well i was in this boat a while ago (I needed a fender amp to pair with the beautiful strat i bought from you Keira!)
So I went to Marshall Music and saw the Princeton recording amp, gave it a bash, and i must say i was a bit disappointed... Stuart from Marshall also agreed that it was overpriced and slightly under awesome (still sounded good but not worth the hefty price tag)
he then recommended i try out the 22w supersonic, which i was a bit skeptical about, and after 5 mins with that thing I was sold! ended up getting one in march this year.
Maybe not the greatest fender ever, but a awesome fender clean tone with amazing bass response and pick attack from that one speaker, and a really awesome drive channel that i use all the time...
So yep, my vote def goes for the SuperSonic ? although i have never played a Princeton other than that Princeton recording amp with the built in attenuator.. so maybe thee older ones or reissues are cool....

The Princeton Recording sucks big time. Absolutely no comparison to the original or the reissues. The Princeton Reissue's biggest problem is it's priced only a couple of grand cheaper than the Deluxe Reverb Reissue.
