....Anybody heard this guy? I saw him at the Johannesburg Guitarfest last year at Linder auditorium. He blew the crowd away!!! He has 2 CDs out and most of the stuff on them is original and brilliant. Check him out, he also has a website and there are a few little Youtube videos of him as well. I heard of him about 2 months before the guitar fest and went there specifically to see Dan and he did not disappoint. He pulled out an instrumental version of Voodoo Chile' and got a standing ovation for it. His own stuff is just as good as well.

Another notable guitarist there was Maurits Lotz who is our very own homegrown allround guitar maestro. Admittedly I never heard of him before and was also extremely impressed by his utter virtuosity.

ANOTHER guy there was Greg Georgiadis who is a full on multi-instrumental dude, playing the Guitar, Oud, Bouzouki etc and he had some really interesting, original, sounding stuff and was also a pretty entertaining guy.

So I went to see Dan and discovered two new guitarists in the process....well there was one more guy....... ?

WHEN is the next guitarfest???? Anybody know??? We need some new undiscovered heroes to idolize ?
Yup, Dan's the Man! IMO he dethroned Albert Frost as local blues king - the result of his work ethic, determination and hard work. He really cooks. I've seen him play often. In fact, we used to go to the same guitar tutor ages ago and jammed together. I stayed behind and Dan plays in the US these days ... go figure!
About half of his latest incarnation of Voodoo Chile is just feedback: no right-handed playing.

Greg is a really talented muso from Pretoria, although I think his best work was as guest with Not My Dog on their heavy album Braai Vibes! Good jazz player, though.

And Mauritz: What a musician! He had a band called Six String Razor ages ago - when the superstrats, clinical humbucker tones and fast playing just became popular. Unfortunately, I think all the session work makes him lazy. Would like to hear him compose and play more instrumentals... Just gig, in fact.

If variety is your bag Bob, check out the DVD World in a guitar - six local acoustic players in concert and they all rock. Six different styles as well, and amazing collaborations.

wish i was there.... for that guitarfest

the other guy was probably "Chris Geden"

He is also an outstanding guitar player with great originality / he was taught by Guthrie Govan for a while and recently moved to London....

He is actually on this forum from time to time....

anyhow... hopefully i will be able to catch the next guitar Fest...

howcome there are so many Drum festivals /shows / workshops and it seems less for us guitar-lovers??
Dan is a very unique blues guitar player, i believe he will bring back the blues.

He even has a music video on MK with one huge ripping blues solo.

Drummers need to be reminded on how everything works ... *duck*

There are plenty of really good players in this country. Why shouldn't there be?

Thinking of some of the great local players I've enjoyed over the years...
            Tim Parr
            Larry Amos
            Edi Niederlander
Louis Mhlanga (you can find my rantings about a I set I saw by him recently elsewhere on this forum)
            Philip Tabane
            Steve Fataar
            Tony Cox
            Steve Newman
            Jethro Butow
            The late Johnny Fourie
            Sez Adamson
            Kenny Henson
            Justin Taylor
Jamie Schofield (saw him with Jennifer Ferguson and with a band Wired To The Floor)
            Tom Fox (Bright Blue)
Cliffie Ellion (played with Robbi Robb in the early 80s in a band named "Shag". Then decided to get a proper job etc.)

And that's quickly off the top of my head.

And I left out Guy Buttery and the two guys who play with Cabins In The Forest. Saw both acts recently and was blown away.

As far as I am aware Larry Amos taught Dan Patlansky slide guitar... saw some clips of him on youtube... awsome stuff
Wasn't implying that there are not enough talented guitarists in SA, just observing that when intentionally going to see one, I came accross two which I myself hadn't previously heard of. It is at events such as Guitarfest that we discover such guys and I was merely wondering when my next opportunity would arise.

I just love Guy! IMO he's ready to take over the torch from Steve Newman. And don't forget his mentor, Nibs van der Spuy. If you get the chance to see either, or better still both, do so!

I suspect there's a lot of good stuff going on. I'm too old now to know where most of it's happening. Though I've seen Cabins In The Forest a couple of times now and they are really good players with interesting, novel material. I saw Buttery playing in a little record store in Melville. Tiny place. Probably about 40 people there. I was... I dunno... 3 meters away. My jaw hit the ground fairly early on, and stayed there.

If you're on the East rand then I know there's some kind of singer/songwriter club going on there. I don't know a lot about it, but a couple of them came along to TJ's open mike night last month.

And the last Wednesday of every month is Andy McGibbon's "Acoustic Music Forum" at Old Parks club in Randburg. Every time I go there I see at least two acts that are interesting and novel. And often some good players as well. I've seen Justin Taylor there a couple of times and he's a really good player. Last month Louis Mahlanga played and he was just so good.

And all those people I see at Andy's are all playing somewhere. Wish I knew where. I should get out more.

Sorry if I came on too strong. No offense was intended, and I apologise for any caused.
No offense taken Bob, I read my post afterwards and realised how it must have come accross. My follow up was merely to explain myself.

My instructor mentioned something about a singer/songwriter club on the East Rand. I will have to check it out. This is the kind of thing I would really benefit from.

The Andy McGibbons things sounds pretty promising as well.

                        Thanks Bob
                          Dan is frikin amazing!!!

I've seen him a few times in Potch..........Smelly the Bass player is wicked as well, always see him playing with his red socks. ? He used to play for a band called Salty Dog......local Durban based band.
