I'm new here, my name is Greg.

I studied Classical Guitar at UCT and I play in 2 Cape Town based bands and session for several others.

I'm into many genres of music from Gypsy Jazz to Rockabilly to Classical to Swing and previously dabbled in the dark arts of Metal!

This forum seems friendly and helpful and if there is one thing a South African musician can use, it's friendly and helpful people like you.

Yeah, I play in a band called "Peachy Keen" it's not strictly Rockabilly, but my playing takes influence from Rockabilly

Yeah, we do do weddings, the band is called "[The] Nomadic Orchestra".

ok... What I was driving at is that there is a Balkan style named (or named in English) "wedding band", with the previously mentioned Mr Papasov being a star of that genre. It's not necessarily played at weddings.

Uh... that's about all I can tell you about that :-[

Haha! We're actually "Balkan Fusion". We're a 5 piece band (Trumpet, Tenor Sax, Tuba, Guitar, Drums) and we take our inspiration from "wedding band" music like Fanfare Ciocarlia, Klezmer music and modern groups like "Balkan Beat Box", "Gogol Bordello" and "Boom Pam" but we also inject a healthy dose of Jazz, Hip-Hop and LOTS of improvistation.

I'm late to the party, but a hearty welcome here nontheless.

I got into Gogol Bordello and Leningrad a couple of years ago after watching the film Everything Is Illuminated and being blown away by the music (especially the more modern stuff). Bill Knight also gave me a great CD by Emir Kusturika which I'm loving... Great to know someone locally is doing that kind of stuff.

That's the best way to get into it! Emir Kusturika worked with Goran Bregovic for the music for "Black Cat White Cat" and "Underground". It's very different melodically and harmonically from popular western music and that is a large part of its appeal for me.

Strange thing is that someone at work has Goran Bregovic's "The Silence of the Balkans". Will have a go
