  • Thinking about cleaning the closet ....Am I nuts or what?

I am thinking about a major gear reduction in the next few days to make way for something that I need as a result of my playing situation changing somewhat dramatically.

I will also be travelling down to Cape Town from 21-25 March so Cape Town purchasers can save on courier charges if anyone in Cape Town confirms a sale of any item.

After much consideration regarding my needs I have decided to get a decent hybrid guitar as I am just so tired of gear changes and feedback issues. The more responsive the acoustic guitar the more problems I have. Fortunately I ordered the Custom Built acoustics for me and not for band situations.

I am waiting for advice on asking prices from those in those know on the following before I put them up for sale:

1) 95/96 Fender MIJ 62RI Strat
2) The 2007 Fender USA 57RI Strat Blonde, Maple fretboard, Tweed case and 50's strap etc.
3) Boss DD3 delay pedal
4) Line6 M9 Modeller
5) The Takamine EG522SC classical with cutaway, electronics & Case
6) Possibly the Logan Custom Tele that I had resprayed as well SD Vintage Stack STK-3b and STK-1n pups, Mighty Mite Birdseye Maple neck etc, case as well
7) Possibly the 90/91 Yamaha GD20 Handmade CLassical guitar.

Is this the right time to sell - I am not desperate so I would prefer to wait for a decent market?

Has anyone else reduced by so much and regretted it or not?
Dude, If you don't need the cash desperately, my opinion will be not to sell everything at once. I don't know. Maybe try and sell the one thing thats the problem. Do you know exactly what you're gonna replace them with?
Personally, I'd say sell 1 classical, 1 strat (While waiting for the new one which can replace the other) and the pedals.

I'd keep two hands firmly on that Logan though, really cool tele and you can't separate it from its sibling.
Roy if you feel you wanna sell then sell cos i see you not selling your customs which would be something i'd advise you not to ? . And you asked if others do this . . . yes i often re tool my setup to suit my current needs and lets be honest our needs shift so as pieter dirk uys said . . . Adapt or die . And in music biz you need to adapt as your interests change . And of course technology changes . . 5 years ago when i got back to the country i wanted to go purely acoustic and i did and it worked for me but since my year at sun city i've become more electric again and sold off my collection of about 11 classicals and bought a usa fender tele and an archtop acoustic steel string for my jazz which is currently my source of income and not purely nylon playing as it was a while back . So yes if you feel the need for the change just adapt , but of course the good thing is , you not desperate for sales so decide on a fair price and stick to it .
You know my views - which is why you have that wonderful GD-20 and not I ?

It's nice to have access to a collection for recording, but gigging has it's own demands, where the value of flexibility outweighs uniqueness nearly every time.

The thing is, you have got some good'uns to keep you happy, so the rest can change to suit your needs, no need to get hung up about them.
Thx for the opinions everyone - all welcome and valued.

@karoo - I don't need the money and have a decent backup, The truth is I got the MIA 57RI and the MIJ 62RI as they were available and I had the cash.

@Keira - I knew you would understand and yes the customs stay with me ?

@Alan - thx for the advice. I think I wil be keeping that GD20 for a long time as it really has a wonderful tone.

MikeM, you know too much ?

Aye. I'm secretly hoping that if/when you do decide to sell it again, I'll be inexplicably flush so I can buy it back. ? And I think the chances are good that you'll eventually find some outrageously good classical luthier to custom build you something to more than replace it. To be honest, I still can't justify having a purely acoustic guitar, but I do love that one's boldness and balance.
                Hi Roy

Yeh I am doing the same thing for an overseas trip.

I am however keeping my guitar and bass gigging rigs and selling all the stuff I dont use for on the road.
Its heartbreaking, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do.

its like selling my children ☹
Interesting post as I am also looking a major gear reduction due to space, and shift in interests. I shall probably offload in the region of 13 guitars plus amps over the next few months. I am in a similar position, its not a money issue rather current feelings. I have been tempted to do this for some time and am worried I may regret it.

It's actually quite liberating. As long as you keep at least one good one handy...

How exciting for the rest of us though! ? ?
Well i must say i always look at it from the angle that if i sell gear it can finance other gear , more aimed at my current interest . So if one buys and sells wisely one can keep shuffling the deck , so to speak at minimal expense but with maximum effect.

I've done that for many years. Sell one, buy one...

But initially I only had one to begin with, so how my collection grew is also great to see some time down the line.

Another thing I have decided in the last years was to stay out of guitar shops. I can easily find something to buy nowadays as there's so many excellent guitars out there, and for once I can afford them!! But through my sell-to-finance-new dealings throughout the years I have at times regretted sales. Or you buy something you "really want" just to end up selling it a year later.

I've also started trimming the fat the last years and bringing my collection down to a manageable quantity, although space will always be an issue.
One Acoustic (Washburn, only 24 made worldwide)
                          Three electrics.

If my house-buying is successful, I will probably buy two more electrics in due time. Aside from playing them, the electrics are also in my twisted mind, pieces of art. So I will be walling them. So I still need two shapes to complete my small collection of legendary guitar shapes. Silly, I know.

Hmm, if you are silly for collecting one of each important guitar body style, then what would you call those people who own multiple MIA strats with only the slightest of variations?

Playing guitar may be a hobby or a profession, but owning guitars is more about satisfying a need - an interest in art or otherwise.

Well have given this issue some thought. In the next couple of months I am going to offload most of my electic guitars including USA Strats, Tom Anderson Cobra, PRS's and Heritage Les Paul CM150. Going to keep my Teles. accoustics going to offload my dreadnaughts including Taylor, Martin, Levin 60;s, Epiphone 70's.
My reason is am going to focus on acoustic, but smaller bodied acoustics due to a shoulder disability which make playing a dreadnaught an issue. Looking at about 13 guitars to start with. Will however keep all my amps.
