  • Been asked for some updates on my Speedster

I got a few guys asking about how my porsche replica build is going and it seems that they can't view images on another forum so I thought that I'd do a mini update here.

Well we're going watercooled. 2.0 vw golf motor, they can be picked up for under R5000. Where a replacement motor like I had in there would be over R30 000. The biggest issue? Well the old car was aircooled and we're going watercooled, that means fabbing up steel frames, mounting waterpipes, radiators as well as an adapter plate to run a engine that was not supposed to be mounted to the gearbox in the first place.

Total cost on the conversion is about R10 000 and the plus's are, cheaper engine parts and the fact that I don't have to import stuff all the time from the US. Way more reliable, porsche stuff and vintage vw stuff is pricey. Plus......................way better fuel consumption, in fact about double and also about double the performance. With the car only weighing in at 740kgs, it doesn't take much to move this.

Once the bumper is on and the bonnet is closed, it's all hidden away, I still have to slot the bumper a bit and mount a scoop, but I'm hoping for this to be done in the next month.

Dummy engine, gearbox, exhaust is all in already. Waterpipes and ductwork is next.
Looks like a beaut...wow! Question though, why put in a dummy engine? Can't you use that space for storage?
Nah, the dummy engine is there for mock up purposes. As I only get 3 months guarantee on the engine, so we placed a bare block and head in place so that we can get everything in place and so by the time we put in the motor, it's basically plug in start the motor and ride the crap out of it for 3 months and if it lasts, bonus, if not, I hand it back and go through the process all over again.

We need the dummy engine to mock up the exhaust, air intake system, water pipes and fuel lines.

        4 months later
You're going to have so much fun when she's on the road! Congrats!
Wow , dunno how i missed this ...

cant remember seeing this at yr place , but i was there more n a year ago now ..time flies...

now u need to update this thread
cheers man, half the fun with these things is when you can build them yourself.........I should be driving it at the end of July. Just a few things to tie up in front and then I can fit the motor.

I got to drive it for a year before strip down started and damn with it only weighing 740kgs, it doesn't take much to move it along. The final colour with be cobalt blue.

Actually found an old clip of when my 914 motor was outback. That thing used to REALLY wake up after 5500rpms.

            =

My speedster was tucked in the garage at that stage, I think it still had the porsche motor out back aslo. If only I had known...lol. I've already added the waterpipes and now I'm at the final stage of the conversion, I want travel free motoring without the hassle of staying aircooled.

I'll update this thread later because a lot has been done.

              Found some old pictures.

handbuilt 4 into 1 exhaust, no silencer, only baffles...........damn this thing used to scream. This was based on a 4 cam carrera exhaust. The downside was that I was pulled off 3 times because it was so noisy............deff track based exhaust.

This is pretty much as it stands now.

my wife, bless her cotton socks, must never see this thread ?

ever since i have known her, 12 years now ,,sheesh ..she has always hankered after either this or original carmen ghia ....man i tried to surprise her with a "good" one but never found one that i felt "comfortable" with that was in my budget....

I know how she feels. I wanted one since I was 16. I went through beetles/ Ghias/ split screen busses and finally landed this one. Decent ones needing work go for about 60k and up. You gotta have some knowledge on motors if you want one or deep pockets.

I've had a Karmann Ghia and while they are uber gorgeous............in South Africa you can't get anything for them. Everything is import only and via the web. A replica speedster is a good trade-off.

If you ever want a spin or want her to have an idea of what one's like, you know where I stay.

                    Thanks , appreciated.
                      hmmmmmm

and a sight that would sicken any purist...................waterpipes!!!

Each water pipe has about 20 bends in each as I wanted to hug the body as much as possible.

Total cost of this conversion is about 20K as I've gone for better parts, so mild performance parts and also genuine VDO/ Bosch parts which are pricey.

Dude! This picture is well cool. I would have loved to take that picture in HDR.
I actually have it in HDR, when I still had my halfpipe at my house, I had a professional guy take pictures of the afternoons events. He was actually more interested in the car.

Looks WAY spooky, I'll see if I can find it tonight.
                            a month later

lmao.........well, not much to report. My low mileage motor was sold by accident, so I'm waiting for another. I've taken the off time to re-route some water pipes and re-welded some stuff as my skills have improved 10 fold since I started this project.

This weekend how I'm doing my new dash pod with the porsche gauges that have been sitting locked up for the last few months. That'll be photo worthy, the rest however is pretty boring until I get my replacement motor.

Don't forget about this though. I'm very keen to see that pic.
totally forgot about that.............will check into that, I know it's somewhere.
