So this question is purely out of curiosity but I noticed that seymour duncan doesnt have any P-J pup sets so im curious on how you choose PJ pickups to compliment each other... Do you just choose whichever ones you like or is there some basic things you have to take into consideration? Lets say I want a semi old school vintage p-bass tone but I also want a higher output modern hard rock tone: can I add a SD Vintage for p-bass and a SD Hot stack for Jazz bass? Solo the P pup for vintage tone and just blend the j pup with it whenever I want a more rocking tone? The Hot Stack is also humcanceling so ill be able to solo it aswell...
Choosing P-J pup combinations?
Yup, pick and choose to taste.
That sounds very very tasty! Damn you for igniting GAS >Freddy-Bl00D wrote: So this question is purely out of curiosity but I noticed that seymour duncan doesnt have any P-J pup sets so im curious on how you choose PJ pickups to compliment each other... Why would you not get one instrument to do the one thing right and another to do the other thing? Both will be better value should you want to sell, and both will be better suited for purpose without compromise. Different number of strings, type of strings, different bridge, type of wood used, it all will help towards your goal of good tone.
Thanks Alan
Well i cant afford 2 quality basses? Getting one quality bass and adding abit of bucks to make it more versatile seems like a better idea then buying 2 entry level bassesGearhead wrote: Why would you not get one instrument to do the one thing right and another to do the other thing? If it's a quality bass and you've bought it second hand at a good price, you can play it between one month and two decades and still get every rand back. Whatever cost you sink into modding it, is gone and you can't add it to any sales price. Rather save your money and buy your second good quality instrument half a year sooner.
Having more tonal versatility is nice, but you will have to ask yourself whether it is worth the dough. Like many, I made the same mistakes and now have to accept selling gear at a loss.

I think you gain more than you lose from a P-J combo. Love the Balls from a P, the snap from the J and the J neck pup is no great loss (then you can put a neck 'bucker in and do the whole Sheehan thing ?).
Quite honestly, if I were to invest in a second bass, it would probably be fretless. That's enough difference to get excited about.

This is gonna turn into a debate ?Gearhead wrote: If it's a quality bass and you've bought it second hand at a good price, you can play it between one month and two decades and still get every rand back. Cash spent on modding gives experience in that area so i wont consider it a waste... And if i sell i can always put the stock pups back in and sell the bass stock.. Having spare pups lying around is never a waste.. You never know when you're gonna need them in the future.. And i already wired my deposit on my bass to the music store yesterday so im past the point of turning back on the bass.. Ill play the bass for a few months before I decide to mod it.. Im just constantly brainstorming and researching.. Ill hopefully have time to fetch the bass on monday or tuesday..
hopefully? HOPEFULLY? make time!Freddy-Bl00D wrote:
