My bass player, Dennis Bronner, and I were asked to play a guest set at Spider Murch and Graeme Boyle's gig at Cocos at Umhlanga Sands last Thursday night. A guy who was staying at the place came into the room and I could see he was enjoying the music. During the break he quietly approached me and said he had a dobro in his room and would I mind if he played a couple of numbers with us because he loved what we were doing. I had no idea who he was and I thought, what the heck, if he's travelling with a 1936 dobro he must be okay. So yep, he went and got his dobro, plugged in and I quietly asked him his name so that I could introduce him. After introducing “Wayne”, we played two simple 12 bar blues numbers.... what a great sensitive player he turned out to be and we had a jol.
After I had finished the set I went to join him at the bar to thank him. Well, he turned out to be non-other than Wayne Coughlan who was in Durbs to do a gig with Brian Finch. We exchanged numbers and promised to do it again sometime either in Durbs or Gauteng... even suggesting that we might ask to play at TJ's sometime.
The moral... never turn down a request to jam... you never know who might be visiting. Of course your gut feel knows who's a chancer and who's not.
