30 Unsung bassists - in no particular order

Hey guys,

I saw the most underrated bass players thread and yeah, the choices are questionable as most of those guys are really well known and have graced the covers of bass magazines.

That's a good selection (although there were a few WTF moments, as with any of these lists).

Some unsung for sure... but guys like Donald Dunn are definitely in the consciousness. Much better list than the best bassists one they refer to.

BUT WHERE THE HELL IS THIS MAN AGAIN?

I don't get how Berry Oakley gets left off any list... as good a jam bassist as any of the best in the genre.

geezer butler cannot be considered unsung .. geezer was an influential part of BS....lyrically the man was a genius

john taylor ..yes ...the face was always worshipped but john was pretty good

Well I think there's some players who are not overlooked as names because they're a member of a high profile band, but may be overlooked as PLAYERS. Geezer and John Deacon are good examples.

I was happy to see Norman Watt-Roy in there. Fab player.

Jerry Scheff has done much better things than he ever did with Elvis. Mitchell Froom used him a lot for sessions in the 90s - notably with Elvis Costello and Richard Thompson.

Chuck Rainey is a seriously fab player.

You can never please all the people all the time with these lists. I can never understand why Danny Thompson doesn't make the cut. I was saying to myself "well, he's not an electric bass player, he plays double bass" but then I saw that guy from the Stray Cats...

I'd also like to see Dave Pegg get a mention. Excellent player and half of one of the great for-hire rhythm sections.

I like Elvis Costello's current bass player, Davey Farragher.

Oh... anybody hear ever listen to early Fairport Convention? Ashley Hutchings was the original bass player. Joe Boyd argues that heavy metal bass playing evolved directly from the parts that Hutchings laid down for Fairport. I can't see it myself, but I'm always loathe to dismiss Boyd. If he's correct then that makes Hutchings an influential and important player. Any opinions?

I haven't heard him with Fairport, but did have a Steeleye Span album with Ashley and Martin Carthy that I still have on cassette somewhere. a good player.

Just to add to the Bassists, Rick Kemp who replaced Ashley in Steeleye Span is a great player as well. I must speak to Liam next time I am over about all the bassists that he has played with, Danny being one of them.
