I`ve had this +- 1990 mex strat for a long long time and since all the US models became affordable to me it has been in its hiding place for many years -- too many. Took it out last nite beautiful light blue -- action still good , but was very disappointed with the pups and pots -- scratchy and low power, what can one do -- is it worth while putting something like EMG`s in or is the whole electronic system below standard. The build quality is actually very good, maple neck , stays in tune, I`ve still got the cardboard box it came in 1991 before I bought a hsc for it. Can anybody advise and if I can do something about where must I take it -- I live in the Eastern Cape
Mex Strat
The Mexis aren't bad - change pickups and electronics and they can be very nice guitars. If it feels and sounds decent unplugged it's probably worth doing up. Whether it will ever take the place of your US models...
Not a fan of EMGs myself, but if you like 'em, why not?
Not sure of who is in your area - you'll have to ask around. Pretty simple job to learn how to do yourself. Or you can get complete, prewired, drop-in upgrade kits from places like Acme Guitarworks. Kinman in Australia even does solderless kits.

If you're going to put EMGs in the whole electronic system is replaced anyway. It is not much work and Strats are easy to work on, but if you're unlucky the battery will not fit in the cavity.Johnny wrote: is it worth while putting something like EMG`s in or is the whole electronic system below standard
