Bypass mod??
DDR4LYF
Is it possible to mod an amp to bypass the preamp in order to use an amp modelling pedal (or something similar) for a different sound?
AlanRatcliffe
If your amp has a send/return effects loop, you already have the ability to do it - just plug the output of the modeller into the return jack and plug your guitar into the modeller. Will usually sound best with the speaker simulator turned off (as you are still using a guitar speaker). If you have a full-on multi effects amp modeller also with an effects loop, do a search for "four cable method", which will let you still use your amp's preamp and write it into your patches.
If your amp doesn't have a loop, one can be added, but how easy this is to do depends on the amp design.

Who would I speak to about getting a mod like this done?
My amp doesn't have the send/return effects loop ☹
ryanguit
hey. What amp is it?
DDR4LYF
It's a Harke HA1200 combo.

if that's a bass amp then you don't need to bypass the preamp.
ill look for a schematic anyway and mark where you would add it if you would still like to.
the reason people bypass the preamp is that the preamp on the clean channel of GUITAR amps is often thin or pre eq'd or breaks up a bit when given some frequencies, so we bypass it when using pedals that emulate preamps/ or put a delay in the loop after the dirty preamp. However on bass amps there really is no need for a bypass unless you have a MUCH better preamp to run into the amp, and even then, you'd be better off selling the combo and getting a poweramp for said preamp with a great cab. you don't want to modify stuff you will later sell. my 2c
being a bass amp means that its not going to get dirty/ be thin, so you can plug in bass effects directly into that guy with no problems.
hope we helped you man

Dude! That helps so so much!!!
I want to get a tech 21 SansAmp VT bass, which models amp sounds (just in case you didn't know ? ). I have read that it can simulate the valve amp sounds really well, so I was wondering if I could bypass my preamp for that pedals amp sounds. I don't have the pedal so this is all speculation right now!!! Does that sound like a good idea or a recipe for disaster?
ryanguit
ok. Not that its a recipe for disaster or anything, but you are getting the pedal. In a Live setting you'll put the sansamp emulation on and plug into a DI, monitor with yours/another amp. In studio as a bassist you'll plug in direct/ direct though that pedal 98% of the time. so having it in the return of your amp (IMHO) would be a waste especially if mod required to do so when it will not affect your live/studio tone at all. it will make maybe a better/worse option for rehearsing but turning those knobs will get you 90% of the way...Does your amp has a DI out?
if yes then leave your amp as is. reason being the DI is probably coming post preamp/ pre preamp. either way its not going to be after where you would add the the Power_Amp_In. so you would lose the DI out... Pointless for a 120watt (?) bassamp to have no DI out. so you would be "forced" to use the pedal into the front of the amp everytime you played unless you own a DI, or trust that the one provided will be fine.
if no, then leave the amp as is. it will remain your rehearsal amp and/or get sold as you will need a decent DI anyway. so... of your 2 options (if you buy that particular pedal) answer: i wouldn't mess the amp up for nothing.
Lastly have you checked out other Bass Pedals/ Bass Preamps/Bass DI's. since this pedal has no DI out. and that is quite a silly move from Sansamp guys for something that sounds decent otherwise? I had a Radial Bassbone that was awesome! but just saying. I'm not even a bassist. so take advice with spoonfuls of salt.

The amp does have it's own DI out.
I've read a couple places that say that the VT bass output can be used as a DI out. But anyway, thanks man this helps a lot.

The VT Bass is just a stompbox kept simple and affordable, made more for those that want to plug into the front of a neutral amp and make it sound like an Ampeg. They have the VT Bass Deluxe for those that need extra outputs, XLRs, FX loops and programmability ($269 RRP - only $100 more expensive than the VT BASS).
They also have three models of the Bass Driver DI Boxes and the RBI rackmount version.
