Last year I was also seriously contemplating getting a set of gold lace sensors, but was advised by friend who had had them in his strat to rather look at the vintage noiseless. He said he was not impressed by the lace sensors. I'm glad I followed his advice cuz my strat is sounding awesome with the vintage noisless pickups ?

I stand to be corrected, but I think they are going at something like R2,800 a set ...or about the same as the even better Kinman sets.
thanks. I'll have to save a bit longer then decide what I want. how do you demo pickups? ? find a guitar that comes with them and try it? how do you know what you're getting without trying it in your own setup?Alan Ratcliffe wrote: I stand to be corrected, but I think they are going at something like R2,800 a set ...or about the same as the even better Kinman sets.
Ay, there's the rub - you can't. You can get a good idea by knowing guitar and pickup models really well, and also having a good idea of what you like to hear, but the acid test is always putting them into your guitar and playing them through your system (and ideally gigging them a few times too).how do you demo pickups? find a guitar that comes with them and try it? how do you know what you're getting without trying it in your own setup?
Once you have one specific model in, you have a "known reference" that can help you choose other models from the same manufacturer, but even that rarely helps you with choosing between different manufacturers' models.
Nick.. I got my pickups off ebay, and in total i paid about R1300 for everything including VAT and postage, but with the current exchange rate you should probably hold off for a while. I must say I did take a bit of a chance, but I am so so happy with the sound and I'm glad i took the risk ?.
thats not a bad price and well within budget but as you say the exchange rate is going to mess things up but I'll keep an eye out.Garth S wrote: Nick.. Quite good pickups, originally designed for Jeff Beck - much better than the Vintage Noiseless.

so if I get them, do I get the aged volume knobs and pickup selector too 8)

I have a Strat with Fender Lace Sensors (Red, Silver, Blue - and once belonged to none other than tone hound Alan Ratcliffe)
One thing I've learned about LS's are that the tone knobs are somewhat essential. I'm currently having TBX pots put in, to give a dynamic thwack to the pickups. I found that (especially on the blue) if they have a normal tone pot wired in, they tend to sound a bit doff.

I totally agree with Modern Muso. I too have the Blue, Silver and Red in my Strat. Bt i put in two TBX's. The blue really shines with the TBX, gives it more punch, almost phat P-90 like.
I also put a push-pull in the volume to activate the bridge pick-up to get the 7 sound strat switching. And you do get a really nice tele sound that you can control nicely with the two TBX's.
I am however really considering getting the Seymour Duncan "Everything Axe" set of JBjr, 59'er, and duck bucker set with each tone control being push-pull, and still having that 7 sound switching.
Christmas wishlist position number one filled ?
