  • What and Where to get beginner MultiFX pedal?

Hi Guys

Just thought I'd pick the brains of guitar scientists on the forums. So yeah I'm in the market for a new MultiFX pedal. I've haven't had one upto this point been using effects on my Cube 30x and my churches MG80. I'm going to run an Ibanez GRG170dxl through it and a Washy D10sce. I also play alot of hard rock, rock and roll, classic rock, metal, pop rock, CCM, folk etc. So yeah I've done some prelim research and just wanted to know what you guys think about getting a beginners pedal. Note that my budget is strictly under R880 since I'm poor ☹ So what would be my best choice from these:

Behringer XV Amp - R879 - Sound Trader.co.za
Digitech RP50 - R799 Soundtrader.co.za
Zoom G1X - R799 Maxmusic and Soundtrader
Zoom G1 - R687 Maxmusic (if the budget gets really tight)
Zoom G2 - R999 (Only If I can get the money, its more of a wish, my main choices are the above 4)

So let me know what you think? I'm leaning towards the Zoom G1x since i've read positive reviews and it seems comprehensive. If you have any suggestions that of other multiFX pedals around this price range that I can consider feel free to let me know. While all these pedals are strictly beginner, its all I can afford right now. When the money comes i'll consider a Boss metalzone or Crybaby ?

As an aside I currently have a Washburn d10scelh (yes its left handed Embarrassed) and the guitar sounds pretty good. I have almost always used Daddario Exp's on it, had a set of ernie balls and dean markleys on for a short time(didn't like them). While I do like the sound with the Daddarios I am getting a bit tired of it. It is too bright and happy sounding, lol. I now want something different and want to try out the Elixir nanowebs, the unfortunate thing is I'm in Durban and can't find them. Can anyone tell me where I can get set here and what price? I'm also willing to have it shipped from JHB or something, so anyone tell me where I can get them cheapest and shipped to Durban if necessary?

Thanks for any help and suggestions, it is greatly appreciated! ?

ok i know it's not in your price range but a Boss ME-50 would be a brilliant pedal for you

    they Retail from R2800 - R3600 new,but you can pick up a 2nd hand one for like R1600 - R2000

i have one at the moment that i want to sell for R1600 neg.(i don't need all the effects in it and i wanna get individual stomp boxes rather),it's a good multi effects pedal for a beginner,it's not hard to work out and it has all the effects you would need. i have a buyer for it who is buying it in about 2weeks or so,so if you want it and can get the money before he does you can take it.

oh and left handed guitarists are cool, you can do the hole back-to-back guitar harmonies live ?
      Hi

In your price range, I would reccomend the Zoom, I haven't seen the G1X but I do have the G2 and it's pretty good to start off with. It will work in the whole Church setup as people wont be worrying about your tone too much, they should be concentrating on other things.
I have got some good sound out of the Zoom, even with the electro acoustic. But with all the good advice you will get on this forum, if you are planning on playing in a professional outfit, you will have to upgrade to pedals or a better unit.
I have a Digitech RP100 and some sounds beat the zoom but the tuner sucks, Zoom will work with a live performance much better.
        Hey

The Cube 30's FX quality is probably on the same level as the pedals u r looking at (on some FX it probably beats the pedals) so I would say leave your system as is and save up for something that will really make a difference when you plug in. I think that dropping R800 on an FX pedal will just leave you dissapointed in the end.

        Cool

IMO Zoom are rubbish , very digital ..... the digitech range is well priced and are brilliant multi FX pedal , by far much better then the zoom range
Oh 1 more thing: u will DEFINITLY be dissapointed with a BOSS Metalzone. The metal zone is far to 1 dimensional (aka scooped mid) to be used for the various styles u listed.

Guys a little help. I only use a wah pedal from VOX and a BOSS delay pedal. My dad has a few distortion pedals and a Harmonist from BOSS which is pretty cool aswell.

I have tried a few multi-effects but I go crazy with the thousands of functions and features.

Please recommend a simple and easy to use pedal. I have no experience with this.

                Thanks.

We have a few guitarists at church who are using bottom range Multi EFX. I must say that none of them really shine through. The main culprits are Distortions that are thin, noisy and one dimensional.

My wife moved over from 25 yrs of keyboard in church to electric guitar at the beginning of this year. We have also gone down the route of finding the right EFX to go with guitar and ended going the pedalboard route, selecting the pedals (Within our budget) we felt would build up the kind of sound we wanted.

A starting point is a good distortion pedal - Best to try out various pedals in your price range. Keep using the other EFX you currently have at your disposal. You can later add other effects such as delay, chorus later and slowly build up your tone.

Also keep your eyes peeled on gumtree. There are always good pedals going cheap. We bought an OD/Chorus and Delay on gumtree for R1000.00.

                    Good point.

Although good tone and mix in church certainly helps. I do get distracted when the mix / tone of instruments is not correct. Makes it hard for me to concentrate on the "other things". ? ?
