Yeah, Grit Laskin is a true artist. ...as in he creates works of art that could stand alone. His medium just happens to be inlay and his canvas is the guitar.

The other guy to look out for is Larry Robinson - more traditional approach and sometimes over-the-top on ornamentation, but still some amazing work.
His work is impressive no doubt, but the subject matter is a bit old school...

There's a British luthier named Dylan Humphries who makes guitars under the brand Daemoness, his work is absolutely startling, brilliant artist, though the guitars in question are probably a little bit too "metal" for most people on this forums tastes ?

Jimmy Wingert (Daughter of Luthier Kathy Winfert) is also making quite a name for herself as an inlay artist as well.
I must be honest and say that a lot of the inlays are a little over the top for my taste. But I certainly appreciate the skill, effort and mastery that goes into creating such a masterpiece. I certainly could imagine that amazing water drop inlay nestled into the neck of one of my guitars, outstanding work that! 8)

I feel the same - great artistry but not for me. Give me a plain, unadorned fretboard anyday.
I like something simple but elegant. Something like this at the 12th fret:

Inlay by Tom Ellis. Cut from a single piece of pearl, and inlaid without any filler. ?
anyone know of local artist using this meduim ?
                Maingard and Ian Corr
thanks Zohn ... as far as I know they do it for thier own bulids only
David Iannone, who makes Morgan guitars, does some nice custom inlay work

Iannone and Laskin were both apprentices of Jean Larrivee.

Linda Manzer also learned her craft from Larrivee, and she too offers fine inlay work.
I did a little reading up on the how to's of hand carved inlays. I really wouldn't mind giving it a go, looks like it could be a good but rewarding challenge. A pearl gecko on the 12th fret maybe...
