Hi Guys,

I know this has been discussed before (for a Vintage 30 and Greenback):
http://www.guitarforum.co.za/amps-speakers-and-valves/marshall-jcm2000-tsl-602-speaker-replacement/
but I don't want to revive a old thread, and its for a Vintage 30 and 25 Greenback config.

So I also want to upgrade my 60watt TSL602's speakers with Celestions. The current stock configuration is 2 x 80watt 12" 8ohm Wolverine speakers connected in series.

The replacement drivers I was looking at was the 60watt Celestion Vintage 30 and the 30watt Celestion G12H30, either in respective pairs or even a combination of the two. Keeping in mind that I am looking for a nice dark tone, ala Mastodon, Baroness, even Heaven And Hell.

Now I don't know anything about wattages and whatnot, how would these 3 configurations work?
1. 2 x 60watt Vintage 30
2. 2x 30watt G12H30
3. 1x 60watt Vintage 30 + 1x 30watt G12H30

Thanks in advance ?

For a darker tone the G12H30s will be better than the Vintage30s, those are VERY bright. I think a Vintage30 + G12H30 combo may be nice too. The 2x12 G12H30 would be cool as long as you're not planning on running your amp flat out. That TSL602 will put out more than 60 watts run flatout and I'm sure the G12H30s will blow eventually. Even having a G12H30 + V30 combo may blow (The G12H) if you run it flat out.

    Here's a demo comparing a bunch speakers

The downside of putting different speakers in series is that they change each others tone, more so than parallel. Rather get two of the same in that case. It does not matter what the wattage on the speaker says, as long as per speaker it is more than that speaker does. So 60 and 30 in series blows the 30 as soon as you put more than 2*30W through them.

Sorry, I don't really understand ??? So what will the wattage be for my cab if I combine the two, 90watt or 60watt? And taking into account what you said, wouldn't a cranked 100watt head running into a 4x12 25watt Greenback loaded cab blow the speakers?

here a nice test of the 2 speakers on youtube:
