A guy called George Orwell wrote a book published in 1948 featuring the concept of Big Brother, essentially the fictional government's system of keeping tabs on the populous. Today we have social media and marketing companies.

I don't see a Facebook camera in your room that updates your status for everything you do. Nor does it control your thoughts.
All social media is completely voluntary. Google have been keeping tabs on you long before Facebook.
Marketing companies conduct surveys to get information, all of which is voluntarily given, albeit for reward sometimes.
Nobody is out to get you. Even the country's president is on a form of social media (without bodyguards) what big brother is watching him?
What the gathering of information does is allow people who want to advertise to place relevant ads in front of you. Much like GFSA is great for anything guitar related, on Facebook a florist can advertise to people who like flowers only, a wedding photographer can advertise to engaged people only and so on.
I say this with all good intentions, if you feel the internet is a big, bad place, get over yourself or don't log on. Keep all your money under the mattress and find a big abacus.
