Chad Adam Browne wroteI just find the whole physical exertion aspect of it quite fun as well and when you speak to scuba divers they all seem to be really against the idea of putting in some effort to enjoy the things they see.
There's a very good reason for that. The more you exert yourself, the more air you use and the shorter your dive becomes. That's not mentioning the fact that higher exertion results in a quicker accumulation of nitrogen in the tissues which heightens the chances of decompression sickness ("the bends").
But it's really about air consumption and being able to dive for longer. See, while you guys hold your breath and check out a nice looking fishy for a couple of seconds, I prefer to stay down for 45 minutes and see the fishy build its nest and fight off others that come too close. Some fishies (like seahorses) require intense searching in a patch of reef and you just won't ever get to see them on breath hold. Just recently I was swimming with a turtle when, after about 10 minutes of it, I thought by myself "those poor snorkelers, they get to experience up to a minute or two of this and then have to bail again for air." Nope, I prefer being lazy and seeing lots ?
