It's so hard to listen to that you wish for a Steve Hofmeyer release. It's such a pity that they didn't stop and do something else. Call it something else. I may be stuck in the 80's and 90's but that was when they made their best albums. Everything this decade has been drivel. And I AM a fan.
how can bands like Testament and ACDC bring out albums that annihilate the supposed best in the genre.
as for the mastering distortion, I have picked it up on a couple of albums that have come out recently. Bullet for my Valentine was one as well. seems these guys are crushing every last bit of signal out of the recording to make these bands sound heavy.
Well that's my two cents

I heard a song from the new cd on a radio station in Pretoria that is released as a single and although it wasn't trademark Metallica it was a good song to listen to. Just a shame that there wasn't really a Kirk solo.

Add The latest Machine Head and Chimaira to that list ?

I know i've given my two cents already, but I gotta say, I'm quite surprised with the replies following mine! I get where all your arguments are coming from (I'm definitely not deaf...well, not yet. That snare's doing the work) But I still love this album. IMO It's absolutely joyous even with its faults! But yeah, I can see how people might step back from the bad mastering.
It's definitely not a bad album I say.. far better than the st.anger fail, but even when not compared to it, I say it holds its own. Remaster it, and it'll be awesome.

New album's wicked! I must say, like most people I think, I prefer the older stuff more. Besides that,
Metallica still has it..... 8)

hey dudes - I'm a noob, but I'm also a Metallica fan
have to say, after reading the thread, I'm impressed to find that everyone's absolutely correct (however did you manage that?)
the new album, even with Lars' drum set sounding like old, tin dustbin lids being banged inside a wheelie-bin with polyurethane hammers, I reckon the boys are stepping back into their stride as fan as the overall composition of their music goes.
now lets have a fund-raiser to buy Lars a new drum kit, and to help james back onto Irish whiskey, and wait for the next album ?

I second that notion....Give him Jagermeister

With some Aftershock?
I am always a fan of James Hatfield's riffs, but i'm more into there older albums(Metallica Black) is still my favourite album. I love the unforgiven 3 as with 1 and two.

Although Death Magnetic is way better than the complete disaster (No offense) That was St. Anger, its still not nearly as good as their older stuff, but an album worth buying! ?

Well, Ive never been a huge Metallica fan, but I will say that Death Magnetic is a solid album. Not the best cd ever, but it is better than a lot of the stuff thats around these days.

My opinion:
I can't listen to Metallica and think "aah cool band" because when listening to their songs I hear a band trying to write songs to fill an album just to sell it as they are sounding a tad bit more radio friendly. But like Alan said in another thread about some bands that were considered metal in the past aren't really considered metal these days, I could be alone on this opinion.
That's honestly what I feel/hear. They should have stopped a while ago and just ride their fame into retirement.

spot on dude, i heard all this hype that their spirit was revived by playing MoP live so they went back 2 the studio...in hind sight all that malarky was publicity. i didnt see much effort to top or even match their old stuff. not much in the way of innovation either
LMinnie
You guys are all spot on....
Ive listened to a couple of tracks and Iam dissapointed...It lacks the hard edge that there earlier stuff had and its abit noisy....
I wouldnt run out and buy the cd but maybe download a few of the tracks for prosperity..
Werner77
I think its a great album!! I'll even go as far to say its the best album since black.
Byron
nice album but everything sounds too loud
your_art_is_life
lol...i think you guys may have listened to way too much loud metallica..
the new album sounds incredible!
funny i say this on a guitar forum, but its got one of the greatest snare sounds ive ever heard.
Shredder3211
I`ll always luv Metallica....does`nt matter how bad their albums get - was a metallica freak back in te day. After st anger i stopped buying their cd`s but still like to listen to the good old thrash days....
