1. How big? For solo restaurant gigs, for a 2000 seat hall or somewhere between?
2. Is portability an issue?
3. Something that is as natural as possible or something to cut through a rock band?
4. Price range?

I owned a Roland AC-60 for a few years and used it with my Tak GB-7C.
It sounded great and i often made use of the vocal mic input and even used it to play music at braai's like a mini PA.
The thing with these amps is that, unless you are doing the restaurant thing, they are not all that great. For recording and bigger gigs you will want to use a DI box and go into the PA directly. Also, another thing is volume - it never sounded as loud as it should, nor filled a room as well as you would hope.
Would you consider getting a DI box and a small, good quality PA instead? I really liked the AC-60 and I do regret selling it at times, but there were days when I looked at it and couldn't really understand the point of owning it...

I tried everything I could get my hands on before I ultimately went the PA route (via a GT-8). PA can give you some of the most neutral/natural sounds and is scalable for different sized gigs (small gig, small PA. Bigger gigs, bigger PA). It also means that in a band situation, you have to rely on either hearing the mains clearly or a good monitor setup. A good DI with some control (and ideally your own dedicated guitar monitor speaker) becomes essential if you are plugging into different PAs.
For a pick up and go, the little combos are great (I like the little Ibanez TA-20 and the Laney range - affordable, compact and fairly natural sounding). The Ibz compresses when pushed hard, but it's a fairly natural sounding compression.
For something bigger but still natural the AERs are wonderful but pricey.
And for use with a band where you want to hang with an electric guitarist and drummer, the SWR Blonde (Strawberry and California) amps cut through with some serious punch (but aren't the most natural sounding).

Thanks poeple! It sounds like a PA would be the best, I also went and researched a bit more.
