Got this off Uvongo Dave from gumtree at a bargain price ? Came with original hardcase and a nice leather strap as well as a new set of strings, even though the current strings seem pretty new to me ? Also the guitar plays amazingly as is, so I assume its had a nice setup done. It sounds AMAZING it feels AMAZING, it looks AMAZING! I am soooo glad I bought it, I didnt know guitars got this good! Wow!!!

Congrats man. It's really a fantastic looking guitar. What was the story with the refinish in the end?
The fret-end nibs do suggest that it's been lightly played - or that it was refretted between the nibs, which I don't think a lot of South Africans (or anyone much - it's expensive) do.

Hey congrats man, that looks pretty "AC/DC - potent" . What amp are you sticking it into?
Kalcium
Thanks ? I really am SOOOO happy with it! @Aubs Im sticking it into a Marshall Class 5 and a Laney LC15 when its working...but mainly gonna be plugging into the Marshall till I get the Laney fixed, think its dry joints or something. I added some outdoors photos as well ? @Singe Im gonna email him to say the guitar arrived etc and will ask if he had it refinished, i think the outdoors pics I posted previously might've been the pics of the guitar when he bought it, so I think if it has been refinished he must've done it after he bought it. But the finish is definitely worn cause some places are shinier than others, like under the strings between the bridge and the bridge pickup where you cant really reach is shiny while most other places seem drier, like the lacquer has been worn off, so maybe it hasn't been refinished? Im really no expert, but thats my observation. He only had the guitar for about 3 years, so if he had it refinished I dont think he could have worn it off in that time, he did say it was completely stock as well, so I think that would mean no refinish too...But I'll ask ?

That is sweeet... is it very neck heavy?

Think the volute adds a little more mass than a regular SG huh? haha na not really hey, i mean, i can sit and play it on my lap quite comfortably, just gotta put it a little further back than usual and once ur strapped up and standing its hanging by the strap so you don't notice it. Must say it is thin though, in terms of thickness not sound, I'd read that they were thin, but you only really get it when you see it in person ? Guess I'll understand the thickness and weight of a Les Paul when I start looking for one of those ?
EDIT: Actually it is quite neck heavy now that im sitting with it again, but its worth it for this ?

Here is the final word on the refinish question:
"THE VARNISH WHEN I GOT THE SG WAS IN A VERY SAD STATE INDEED AS YOU KNOW SO I HAVE JUST STEEL WOOLED IT AND OILED IT WITH LEMON OIL"
Uvongo Dave types EVERYTHING in caps....
Not something I would have had done if I had seen it in its 'sad state' but it really looks, sounds and feels great so no complaints there and its a definite excuse to have it refinished at some stage ?

Congrats man, that looks sweet! Best cure for a neck heavy guitar is a broad strap made from material that won't slip over your shirt. You could even put some lighter tuners on if it really bothers you.
Hammeron
Beautiful! Mind me asking what it set you back?
Let us make you a nice wide, padded, hand-crafted leather strap with the Gibson Logo embossed onto it. Any colour you dig! ?

haha desperately trying to slow down, but when a deal jumps at me...How can I possibly say no ? I bought this with what I was going to allow myself to spend at the end of the year/start of next year...so unless some stupidly good deal comes knocking Im gonna hold back for a while ? At least on the big things...a pedal here and there cant hurt ?
Feel free to come play her if you like, but bring ur LP I wanna try it out ?

Congrats! Looks like it's been kept well.
I've got a new SG Standard and I love it. I'm interested to know how a '72 model sounds in comparison. Although, I'm yet to find two SG's that sound the same.
Not to try and burst the bubble in any way, but 70's era Gibsons are not usually the best specimens due to the Gibson corporate buy-out by Norlin Industries. Construction quality in this ear wained and thus the sound quality suffered.
What's your serial number? Does the guitar have a 3-piece neck? I'd bet my bottom dollar.
Cheers ?

Re. 70's Gibsons....that's the general
perception (same as with the CBS Fenders ) but I can assure you that these guitars are still formidable and very good instruments and these are becoming more and more collectable (even in the USA). The 3-piece neck and volute have its virtues...it makes for a very strong construction and should not affect the tone imo.
Kalcium got a great guitar at a great price and to be honest, if I had the choice between this '72 and a new SG...well, it's a no brainer ?

I've yet to actually see a Norlin Gibson that isn't a great guitar. I've seen some pics of them with crappy finishes, the LPs are heavy as hell, but the quality doesn't live up to the myth IMO.
They were the last Gibsons to be played by any of our guitar heroes - Mick Ronson, Randy Rhoads, Zakk Wylde all played Norlins while I can't think of a single famous Gibson made after 1980.
I think a bigger part of the Norlin story - apart from the weight of LPs - were their poor design choices. The Paul anyone? People hated the RD, but compared to certain recent Gibson designs that shall go un-named, the RD is a classic. The mini-humbuckers, the giant bridges. These features didn't compare favourably with the '52-'65 Gibsons.
But the idea that they're poor quality guitars has been much exaggerated. And this is reflected in the fact that pre-1980 guitars continue to increase in real value.

Re the 3 piece maple necks. Now while I love having mahogany necked Les Pauls, the reason they were put on the '50s guitars? They were cheap. The Gibson flagship model in the '50s, the L5 had - guess what? A 3 piece maple neck.
ESP does the same thing today. Volutes too, if I'm not mistaken (Zark can tell us with that awesome Eclipse of his). And those on some of their top guitars while they still put all mahogany necks on even their cheap Les Paul copies.
