There seems to be a trend lately of derailing classified posts.

It's not exactly fair to the seller to keep posting why you won't buy it, therefore giving others reason not to as well.

If it's not helping to sell, rather don't post.
I agree Don ......... but!!!!! ....... I think we are ALL (well, most of us) guilty of this practice, and I do believe it should STOP!!!

Interesting avatar Mike... seems to be a bit...cynical? ?

Apologies for derailing the derailing thread ?

I must say I've not really noticed this trend. I've seen a lot of "wish I had the money" comments, but nothing really that I thought was negative. I recall some time back someone posting a link of an alternative ad on someone else's classified, but that was reported and rectified. You mention particularly people giving reasons for not being interested in the items being offered. I agree, that sort of thing is not on. But is general banter viewed as a no-no? I would have thought that that would draw a little more attention to the items on offer.
        Perhaps ?

The reason I +1'd was because of Racman's tele sale thread. Went there to see the latest price and there was a bunch of irrelevant rambling. Having a bump or comment is no problem, but discussions should take place elsewhere.
          I haven't spotted the derailing.
          Maybe I'm just dof.
I want to buy that Tele ... but need to sell something first to raise some cash.
I agree with MikeM, I find that when i go to a thread and want to find the price or the substance to the topic, I have to scroll through 3-4 pages of people talking about RANDOM stuff.

I do think though that this happens in every thread, not just classifieds, but it needs to NOT happen in classifieds at all.
I am fine with a bit of talk on my ads... I usually end up starting most of it on my ads......
              People look at the thread....
Derailing the product is no good though..... But I have not see nmuch of that....

... which is why a seller should mention those in the thread title.

Site feedback: why not lock threads after the initial post? If someone wants to ask questions, they can PM. If the seller thinks the PM answer adds value, he can edit his first post.

That may be a great idea. Except the OP may have to reply to many posts. Although, it would be easier to see what's happening in the classifieds.
Can one not moderate their own thread in classifieds?
Talk serves to keep the ad relevant. If the talk strays into, "There's no way I'd pay that for that guitar..." then you have a problem. Otherwise it's a natural bump. In Racman's ad, for example, not a single reason has been raised why people shouldn't jump on it covered in woad. I frankly am amazed that it's been sitting so long at that price. I can only conclude that everyone else, like me, is broke.

All the talk does is keep it on the frontpage.

as long as the talk is relevant....

anyhoo I raised this just as a reminder to keep it clean. I sometimes find myself bored and tempted to troll a bit. I have to keep control of myself.

I have two other ads that need to be on the front page as well .... ? ? ? ?
i dont mind it. as long as it stays with the topic of the product being sold.
asking questions and stuff about the product, it might even get someone interested in the product who did not have GAS for that product but evolve some sort of GAS for that product.
and probably end up buying it.

It keeps the topic fresh. the seller should update his price when it is lowered, remember the info is on page 1.
not on page 7 between mika and bob's reply ?
yes, updating the price on the first post is important.
Discussion about the sale itself seems fine to me. Discussion on the merits of what is being sold belongs elsewhere and I believe this is Don's point.

EG I advertise a Tokai Love Rock for sale and in the ad I mention the woods, the color, provide pictures etc.

Somebody wants to know how hot the PUPs are - that seems acceptable
Somebody wants to point out that for only R15k more you could buy a real Gibson and not a cheap knockoff - NOT acceptable.

Same if you advertise a Vox wah and somebody pipes up with their opinion that the Vox is for sissies and the Boss is what you really need - not acceptable in a classified.
I see a big storm in a tiny teacup.

At the end of the day, unless it's your classifieds thread, dont try and prescribe to others what they should and should not allow in THEIR thread. If thread starters feel annoyed at banter in their thread, they have all the tools they need to keep it banter-free.

                                    They do?

Short of asking the moderators to intervene (and they don't seem to be around here much these days) there is nothing anybody can do except complain if things get wildlky OT. OK.... in my case you can always track me down at TJs and smack me around with my own crocs.
"I'm selling a wotsisname for so-and-so. One lady owner. Never been raced. The wotsisname I mean.

Please don't banter in my thread."

Not rocket science is it? ?
