Ag, I really don't mind doing it for free. Just as long as I get a tiny bit of credit every now and again :-[
As a former UCT Music student let me give you this advice: TAKE THE MONEY DAMNIT! hehe 8)
Nah, he's got the right idea
MCB. It makes for good karma while also making him that little bit better each time he does one. Just know when to say no
ATG, so you do not overload your regular workload from school etc and your own personal practicing and playing for enjoyment time, rehearsals and gigs etc.
At some point in your career, and you will know when that is, you should be way more discerning about what you give away as regards your time, your craft and your skills. Free or reduced rate work can be amazingly beneficial, but you also have to not get in a habit of doing it because you get known as the guy who works cheap or for free and that reputation will stick to you like glue.
Another reason undercutting is not good is because you risk upsetting the apple cart as far as the musicians who were making coin before you. It probably took them a very long time to get a "going rate" happening and if someone is consistently working for less, you are going to piss off a lot of your colleagues. Producers etc who are hiring studio players or club owners and bookers are going to start saying...."why do I need to pay this much when so and so is doing just as good a job for 1/2 your price?"
Perhaps you can approach the SABC or try find a film composer or three and try get some paid transcription work going?
Are you doing this by hand or are you using notation software? I have Sibelius 6 and it is really nice. You are in college so you will qualify for the reduced price. Finale is good also but I am a huge fan of Sibelius.
