  • I fully agree. When trying to find parts from our local stores it is indeed a nightmare. Not just when it comes to classical guitars or acoustics but even electrics too.
    • That's a pretty good idea. I think the most pitfalls are when finishing it though. Especially if its the first one you're building and you just wanna play the damn thing! Patience is definitely needed.
      • Hey man.

I have actually bought a few. The cavity work on the bodies are great, necks fit nice and snug. I have had no problems with the electronics except for the pickups not being very great. Basswood is soft though so its really easy to dent when its unfinished.
        • Hey guys.

Does anyone know if Tonerider pickups are still available here in SA? I have emailed the distributor but have not had any reply.

          • Not at all. I'm in Pretoria and bought it off a mate of mine.
            • @Nitebob - Old acoustics are awesome too! I have an old made in Japan Aria 12 string. Not sure exactly how old she is.... Model no A-684.
              • Thanks guys! I'll check it out. Yeah some of the prices are a little steep. There's a Yamaha SA-15 on musicworx.co.za going for R5000...
                • Hey guys.

So recently I have been getting into these quirky old japanese guitars. Anybody know if we might find these things around here in pawn shops? Or if anybody has one they wish to sell... Please let me know!
                  • Not sure if this is what you want but The Gear Junkie has a Vox replacement cloth. Maybe you can shoot them a mail and hear if they have anything else?

                    • The OR15 is one great sounding amp but sadly it is quite expensive. You could check out the Ibanez TSA series of amps too. Not as gainy as the Orange and Blackstar amps but they do work well in a church setup. I have successfully used the first TSA5 in church. Though I kept it on the tubescreamer channel with the gain low and used pedals with it. I bought it exactly because I didn't want to lug my old Elk twin head and cab to church and back. It's quite hefty...
                      • Those quirky guitars are awesome! I recently bought an old Crescendo from my uncle which has one pickup that looks like a goldfoil. Just without the gold! It a really cool and quirky guitar. Action is crazy high. Can't adjust pickup height because the pickup is attached to the scratchplate and there's no pickup cavity under it! I enjoy playing slide on it though!
                        • They do sound very cool indeed. I think Teisco came up with these in the 60's or something?
                          • Elixir nanoweb 10's here as well. 11's on acoustic. I've had a set on my tele for about 9 months now and they are not showing any sign of rust and still have tone. Not new string tone, but tone nonetheless.
                            • It does seem a little off... But that's why I posted it on here. If its not GFSA approved... Better safe than sorry.

Thanks - looks useful for bits n pieces, imho - pedal prices are a bit looney.

Well to be honest I've never even heard of some of those pedal brands...
                                • Anybody seen this? They seem to bring in some guitar parts. Not a huge variety on the site though.

                                  • Hey guys. Sorry to revive this old thread but I was wondering if anybody has seen/had dealings with these guys. They are based in Durban and laser cut mother of pearl and abalone specially for guitars from what I can tell.

                                    • Are Schecters available in SA again?? Last I heard we didn't have a distributor for them locally.
                                      • Quite an interesting read. "The imperfections add the coloration to the tone". An interesting statement.
