  • Yeah I saw his price-list now on Facebook. I think I might want to go for a commercial pickup rather than hand-wound.

So any recommendations on what pickup like a Seymour Duncan or DiMarzio would suit my style?
Maybe a JB? I can get one for R1350. Is that a good deal?
    • Thanks for the response man. Will check him out.
      • Hi guys,

A friend gave me this unwanted, barely used Cort bass guitar and I was wondering what I should ask for if I sell it.

What do you think I can sell it for if i were to sell it?
        • Hey guys,

I have a Fender Modernplayer Strat and I am thinking that it's time to upgrade the bridge humbucker.
My favorite thing about this guitar is its versatility (especially with its coil tap) and I would like to keep it like that.

I want something that can play hard rock but also be able to have a nice clean tone (if that's possible) Something with good sustain would be great too.

Some things I often enjoy playing is classic rock like AC/DC and Led Zeppelin, but also bands like Nirvana, Collective Soul, and Offspring. So something that can play hard rock, classic rock and alternative rock would be great.

Also, where to buy? I'm only looking to spend max R1500. I see online that takealot has a lot of DiMarzio humbuckers (like PAF Pro, Super Distortion, Tone Zone, etc.) but I don't know much when it comes to upgrading pickups.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
          • Hey everyone,

This might be in the wrong section. If so I am sorry!

I do not know much when it comes to guitar effects and pedals but I have a Boss DS1 and a Korg multi effects pedal that I like to use occasionally. I used a boss 9volt 230V power supply with them for quite a few years until recently when it stopped working. I took it to my local music store where they told me it is completely fried and I'll need a new one.

I see they are quite expensive just for a power supply so I was wondering if there are any cheaper alternatives rather than buying the expensive Boss power supply?
            • Hi Guys,

I bought a second hand Washburn electric guitar case a few weeks ago. There are no serious issues with it other than the fact that the top lining is a bit loose and can be pulled out or off quite easily. I see someone has tried to glue it before but it is all dried up.

What should I do to place it back on so it stays there firmly? (as in what glue to use, double sided tape etc.)

              • Thanks for the advice guys, appreciate it. Yeah I am a student so you could say I am quite financially challenged hehe.

I spent a lot of money I saved to buy a Fender Strat last year. It's a Chinese made Modern Player but I believe it is a quality guitar (nothing like a Squire). So I wont be buying another guitar for a while now. ?

I just thought that if I could get this Ibanez back to playing condition again I could use it as a backup guitar and use it for different playing styles like metal or alternate tunings. Then if it is playing well or decently I would consider upgrading the pickups.

Maybe I should take it in to a pro to have the frets levelled and have a good setup and see how it plays from there. If not then I guess that's it :'(
                • I have an Ibanez GRX70DX. I bought it when I was still a beginner guitar player in 2009. It was one of those beginner packs. It served its purpose for me when I started playing.

I still like the feel of the guitar but it has a bit of issues like a small amount of fret wear and has quite a lot of fret buzz (I am hoping that a good setup and fret dress will simply solve that problem). I also don't think the nut is right (looks a bit too low and looks to be made from plastic). I am considering upgrading it so it will sound like a good quality instrument but I am worried that I end up wasting money on it and it remains a cheap, crappy sounding guitar.

How do you know if the guitar is worth upgrading?

                  • Anyone know where I can find a decent case for a Strat shaped body thats under R1k?

It doesnt have to be amazing, just as long as it protects the guitar ?
                    • Thanks for the replies

                      That sandbag/beanbag does look useful.
I saw now that some people say you should not use a rest or cradle at all when doing work on the neck such as intonation because of the tension that gravity creates on the neck and that you should work on the guitar in the same position you would play it.

It seems like there are so many different opinions and debates on what the right thing to do is when it comes to guitar setups ???
                      • Hey there.

I was so interested in receiving answers to my question I didn't notice that you had to introduce yourself first. My Bad! :?

My name is Brian, I have been playing guitar for about 6 years now. I love playing alternative rock, classic rock, a little bit of metal and grunge. (Although I also like experimenting with different genres and learning different styles.)

I own an Ibanez GRX 70dx, an Ibanez Acoustic-electric and a Fender Modern-Player Stratocaster HSS. I use a Roland Cube 30X amplifier.

                        • I want to learn how to setup and maintain my guitars and create a little workspace to do this. What do some of you use or do in order to do things like changing of strings and making adjustments on your guitar?

I see there are things like a Dunlop guitar neck cradle for R335 and Fender has a workstation they sell. They both seem pretty expensive for the simple things they are.

There are also simple DIY ones you can make that I have seen online like this one:

If I build one myself are there certain specs or measurements that they have to be in order for them to work properly or does it just have to hold the neck up and that's it?
                          • I see the wear you have goes more evenly across the fret (or maybe it's just me)
Haha thanks yes that does make me feel a bit better.
                            • @ez I think you're right. Since I bought the guitar (in 2009) I've always used 9s. I'm thinking of putting heavier gauge strings on now. Do you think that might help a little? I think I'll just give it a good setup and leave it until it gets worse.
                              • Thanks for the replies.

I am based in Johannesburg Westrand side

How much will it cost me (roughly) to have the frets leveled and dressed ?
It is a cheap guitar so if the job is really expensive then I am not sure if it is going to be worth it.
                                • Hey Everyone,

I am new here and this is my first post.

I have an old Ibanez beginner electric that I used to play. I have decided to fix it up and get it into playable condition again. I have also been trying to learn how to do guitar set-ups myself as I am growing tired of sending my guitars into music shops and paying so much money just to have someone make minor adjustments. (So I am very inexperienced when it comes to guitar repair and set-ups).

I have noticed that from a few years of playing this guitar it has a few dents or very tiny flat spots on certain frets (mostly the frets nearest to the headstock). I have also noticed that when playing certain chords on these "flat spots" certain notes sound sharp or out of tune. I am not sure what exactly needs to be done to fix this problem. Do I need to have someone level all the frets, should I have it re-fretted or because the dents are so small will a good fret polish or clean-up help? If I need to get it re-fretted or have the frets levelled how much will this cost me?
Here is a pic of the neck. Hopefully you can see the fret wear (It is really tiny but I am sure it is making a difference in the sound).
