Quick Strat Opinion

I hate it when a quick pup change turns into a massive project. I stripped my Squier to change pups and had this design on it. I figured I may as well take it off but seemed to have sanded off more than i can chew... should I leave it as is with a new coat of clear or go the whole hog and strip it completely and respray it something new. If I do refinish it completely I want to go for something REALLY cool, and suggestions are welcome... ?

I've seen a guitar done by a panel beater type painter and it wasn't so hot. Those paints are chemically designed to bond on metal, not wood. So the shine they give is a little dull.
If I do go gold, i want it to really Pop. I heard of a technique with metallic colours where you have a gold bas, for example, then a coat of clear, lay some glitter, then another coat of clear, more glitter etc for a few coats. then you get a metallic / 3D effect going.

then again, this was my first guitar that I bought with my own money and has sentimental value. Maybe I should take it back to black and keep it that way. Later I'll find a MIM Strat and play with that finish when I have the time, space and tools.

Bra, paint is paint. As long as you have your surface preparation waxed, and use the right primer, everything should be fine.

And obviously you would take it to a reputed panel beater, not some karafaan dorp special. ?

"paint is paint" - No ways! I have sprayed alot of things. Refinished my gibson twice, sprayed about 8 diff effects pedals, and done countless other projects on wood, plastic and metal. Certain paints dont like certain surfaces (and even primers) and are simply not designed for them.

The primer you use is highly important in terms of its chemical bonding and also the colour of the primer can determine how deep a finish looks.
"Sprayon" (thats the brand) make some really nice metalic paints. I have used them for painting my effects enclosures and they came out really well.
If you end up going this route, i'd suggest spraying a black primer as it makes the gold slightly darker and gives it a much deeper look. Then shoot many layers of clear!

I have also used the glitter technique on a pedal. For this technique you need to shoot a huge amount of clear laquer to even the lumps in the glitter out, and the finish can be a little unpredictable cause the laquer changes the reflection of the glitter when its sprayed on.

However you decide to finish the guitar, do it slowly and let each layer dry properly before shooting the next layer. Dont spray super thick layers as they can crack upon drying.

So I've decided to go for the white with black scratch plate

started painting this week, hoping to have it done soon. So Far so good. although I don't really know what I am doing.

I can spray evenly enough do to other projects on cars but due to a low budget I am using standard spray cans.

I saw a Spray on Polyeurothane but wasn't sure if it was the correct one so I am going to leave off the clear coat for now.

nitro is a real pain the balls dude. i got mine sprayed with nitro.

nice enough but jeez the mission. nitro keeps shrinking even after its dried. mine sat under uv lamps for 2 months with sprays sanding and resprays in between. its now been 6 months and needs more touchvups...

offtopic, apologies. My strat comes with white knobs and i would like to change em to the black ones as i have changed the pup covers to black. Where can i get the black knobs from please?

Nothign stopping me from doing it again after a while, or on another strat. I'm going to have one in each colour... ?

I am getting my scratch plate, a tortoise shell plate (to remove the bucker from my MIM), new screws and string trees from Terry Distributors. I mailed for a quote and got a very prompt response.
I don't mind generic if it doesn't affect the tone negatively.

Back in town now if you still want to meet up some time regarding finishes etc. Cornflakes Design does look super sick!

I made a mission anyway. I reckon I could do a better paint job if I had a decent workspace but I am done and here is the result.
