Seeing as I never really lift my whammy bar, maybe I just need to get a tremol-no and set it to divebomb only. Do they sell tremol-no's locally?
Yes, Music Connection have the agency, all you need to do is request it from your local store and if they tell you they can't get it tell them to pick up a phone and get in touch with them. I've gotten them on all my floating bridge guitars, the nicest side effect is that when you lock them into fixed bridge there's a noticeable increase in sustain and a bit more attack as it prevents the springs from absorbing the shock. The last price I had was R699 full retail, you'd need the small clamp version.
The whole V formation thing with springs is just epic fail, I've always found that it makes the bridge less responsive for the more fluttery work.
This may be a silly question but have you tried replacing the grommets on your whammy bar? you should do it every 6 months - 1 year or so. They wear out and stop making proper contact with the bridge which causes the bar to drop and feel looser.
