rikus So I caved to the GAS! I decided to just do it! I drove past my home on the way back to work to quickly plug it in and it sounds muuuuch better! It certainly has twang! I'm really looking forward to play it after a bit of maintenance. I'll snap some proper pics tonight.

Cleanup, new strings and properly adjusted PUP heights and she should sound better.

flatfourfan It's funny that the headstock came into discussion, well not really when it comes to Cort, they seem to make some butt ugly headstocks on most of their guitars............it's such a pity. I'm not feeling any of those ideas.........rather leave it as is and enjoy it, or replace the whole neck. edit: Just read the rest.................I'd cut that headstock and maak n las before buying a whole new neck...............DO IT!!!!
rikus Yeah, I'm not talking about the first posts, those are all horrible, but I'll happily do the cut and paste type jobby to shape a proper headstock.

rikus So here's the rust bucket! Gave it a quick once-over last night. The truss rod needed a bit of a tweak, and the action had to be set. The intonation wasn't too bad, no doubt thanks to having six little barrels! ? The tuners aren't that great, but I hope they'll behave a bit better once I restring it properly. I've just got a few quick question I hope someone can help me... Firstly, is the neck pickup height adjustable on a tele? Secondly, on the high e string I needed to turn the 2 grub screws in the saddle all the way in to get the action were I wanted, so the whole barrel is lying on the bridge plate. Is this bad? Also, how big of a factor is the break angle of the strings over the saddles on an electic? Does it also influence tone and sustain like on a acoustic?
makepeace you could actually have a go at that headstock wrt trying to make it more fender like.. its got enough meat ? the body looks lovely. i'm assuming you want to bring the neck pup up? they are screwed into the body on teles i think, so maybe if you put something underneath it, like a spring or piece of sponge or whatever? and then just screw it in so that its high enough for you, maybe that would work? not too sure, but thats what i'd do ?
AlanRatcliffe None too shabby! Double-bound even. Firstly, is the neck pickup height adjustable on a tele? Yup. Just whip the pickguard off (no need to remove the strings even) and turn the mounting screws out to raise. If it's on springs, it'll come right up, if it's on foam, it might have compressed and you'll have to replace it (use draft excluder or ideally replace with springs). the whole barrel is lying on the bridge plate. Is this bad? Also, how big of a factor is the break angle of the strings over the saddles on an electic? Does it also influence tone and sustain like on a acoustic? It's not bad as long as there is some downward pressure (and there always is with through body stringing). Shimming to angle the neck will let you raise it more if you want, but that would be more to get string clearance over the body than for tonal reasons.
rikus Thanks guys and thanks for the advice MP and Alan! I think I might give a shim a go. It seems simple enough (and is reverseable)!
rikus Did the shim thing last night and it worked beautifully! I didn't think it was going to be so easy. I used a small strip cut from a business card, as a lot of folks online recommend using business cards, and it couldn't have been easier. All the saddle barrels are now lifted nicely from the plate and it's playing super nice ! While I had the neck off it seems (to my very uneducated eyes) that the guitar is not a plywood wood and that the grain on the top and back is the real grain (please correct me if I'm wrong). Can anybody identify the wood? Grain similar to the top is visible in the pocket It looks like that dark grain in the right hand corner of the neck pocket is also on the top. Or am I seeing this all wrong?
flatfourfan This looks like a solid wood guitar, with ply you'd see horizontal layers straight away. This is from a Korean Squier II Strat.
rikus Thanks FFF! That really helps! @ TC, I also thought it was veneer before I took the neck off, but how thin can the veneer be? I can't see an obvious veneer layer? Either way, I don't mind, I'd just like to know.
