You have tons of experience and knowledge, I can tell. I would never have thought of it that way!
Just something I picked up from paints. The old two tone sunburst Fenders were actually three tone bursts with the red faded from UV exposure.
So are they jack sockets or "jap" sockets?
From pics I've seen of the innards it looks like there are small PCBs mounted on the jacks, so it may not be a simple case of swapping out the plastic jacks with some Switchcrafts. Also some designs need the jacks to be isolated from the chassis.
Aren't most amps handwired?
Well the term
used to mean point-to-point turretboard type construction, but marketing departments caught on. As it's largely modern PCB construction, I think it's more likely that the boards are wave soldered and then someone just solders the bigger peripheral stuff.
You obviously mean "of quality" here?
Yup. No wall warts (wall warts and rack gear don't go together AFAIC). Balanced line level inputs, short signal paths. There is the
Behringer MX882 available, and on paper it looks good, but I don't know... What can you reasonably expect for a selling price of R1,700? I have to do something soon as my Alesis is getting iffy (jacks are beginning to give problems and it's started causing a ground loop hum).
You could use a multi-channel sound card and lay down seperate tracks in cakewalk or Cubase.
I mainly need it to sum the outputs of three different computers for monitoring.
Do you think I'll be able to run them on GR3 if I add MIDI ports to my laptop?
That's how I'm using mine.
