Hey guys

So I'm planning two amp builds. But want to buy the head and cabs. Contacted jp le roux and if I supply tolex etc, he'll build me a cab or head starting at 1500. And for that price it's not birch. Is this normal? Cause jeee I'll be spending r6k on two heads and 2x 112 cabs.

Can anyone recommend someone more reasonable?

Thanks
Mike
I think he's under charging you ? That's for woodwork, upholstery and fittings? A more reasonable price would be R2K :-\ You get what you pay for. If the cabinet maker has to the job on a limited budget, quality will suffer. You sit with the workmanship long after you've forgotten the price you paid for it :'(
Sounds kind of reasonable. I was looking at buying a cab for my 5E3 and the lowest price I could find was $200 ex shipping from Mojotone. Didn't investigate locally though. Just decided to build my own. Might be worth building your own cab and getting an upholsterer to do the tolexing etc if you don't want to?
Interesting. I'll prob just make it myself then. That way I can be sure I get good quality materials.

        Thanks for the input Karel

I see yea Mp probably will. Can get some marine ply and set up my finger jointing jig
Would be keen to know how you do the finger-jointing. I'm thinking its more of a mission than anything, planning to biscuit joint. But, if you can convince me that its not that much of a mission I might change my mind ?
It's a mission but if I'll be saving R6k on cabs, it's worth it for me.

I was quoted 300 dollars for a u.s made 212 which includes everything, so I actually think Karel is being ridiculous considering s.a labour is way cheaper

              That reminds me:

"The bitterness of poor quality lingers long after the sweetness of a good price is forgotten."

              Or something like that....

That is not always the case. Skilled labour in this country can be rare and therefore expensive. Those kind of artisans/craftsmen are a dime a dozen in the US, simply because there are so many people over there.

When you talk about unskilled labour - well there we have lots and lots. Production lines are run by hand in SA that have been run by robotics overseas for years and years because that type of labour is cheap here.
Too much of a hassle to type it all out, especially with one hand but I am glad I did some phoning around
ah! well when you got a moment, i'd love to know what you found out.
                      a month later
I built this cab last week - rabbet and dado joints/pine sides/16mm commercial ply baffle/front mounted :woohoo:

Loaded with 2x10 Celestion gold backs.

Ausum looking cab Karel. Where did you get that funky snakeskin covering?

                          @Skywalker: I caught a snake in the garden ?

Nope... the guy I built it for supplied the tolex.
                            Haha ?

                            Sweet!!!

Snakeskin coverings don't always look that great but this looks pretty cool.

                            Nice!!!
Agreed. The dark is a lot more understated.

                              It looks like Mojo's stock?
Karel, I saw some cabs you built for Richard Pryor, very nice work!
