I'm a firm believer in this. Always better to have a small amp mic'ed than a big amp turned down.
Amen! Preach it brother! My philosophy as well.

The weigth isn't such an issue for me, but if the 2 x 12 50 watt modelprovides extra headroom then it's a different story.
I've tried the AD50VT 2x12" before, but as far as I've heard it's no longer available (I was thinking of getting one to supplement my 1x12" at bigger gigs about 7 or 8 months back, but because it wasn't available and because I decided I have enough volume anyway I didn't), so that's why I didn't mention it. The 2x12" is a little bit louder - about 3dB actually 'cos that's what an extra speaker typically adds in terms of volume - but besides that it also has a bit of a "bigger" sound with a wider spread (ouput from two speakers obviously moves more air) so it will be more easily heard off to the side of the stage. The tone is closer to the AD100VT (same speakers) but a bit less "open" because it's a closed back amp. Tighter bottom end than the AD100VT or the AD50VT, but I wouldn't say it's got more bass though - less than the 100 (I think the power amp is tuned for more lows in the 100), slightly more than the 50. Personally I think the overall tone of the AD50VT 1x12" is better, mostly because the speaker is better (Celestion vs VOX Custom).
