sound Music theory / modes advice needed

hi all, is there anyone on here with a solid qualification in music theory - in particular the modes - who would care to share some advice / resolve a dispute..??? either via PM, emial or phone?? I dont want to take up valuable forum space on something that may not interest many others. hope someone can help. krgds stephen

Thanks Evo. I actually still have the clips on my desktop.

The issue is that, that's still not helping me understanding their application. That helped me understand their flavours. It's easy to tell someone, Hey play F# Phyrgian over these odd chords.

I could validate it with the parallel method of considering the chord structure and applying that to the mode, but that's varying to the jazz side a lot again, but I don't really want to be playing GbMaj7b5s ?

But I'm guessing that's their only application in a normal I-IV-V?

The AHA experience comes when you you apply modes to other scales like say the hexatonic or nonatonic blues scale.
Enough with answers how about a question. The blues scale is built off the pentatonic minor scale at the aeolian or vi degree mode, How come it works well against major and dominant chords as in 12 bar blues?

The thing is... u say you want to apply them... so applying them in a 'playing the changes' way is gonna seem like jazz, but its way cheaper than jazz...

If u just play the same old C ionian over a C major and E phrygian over an Em chord (assuming u just sticking in the key of C) ... then you really not doing anything but playing in the key of C ... no modes come into play... modes take form in modal composition... or using parallels... stick to playing in a key and you wont have to understand modes... leave them for a time when you ready to compose in them.... if you ready to compose in them then check out Ron Miller's books...

Working from C major...

C D E F G A B
1 2 3 4 5 6 7

vi = A Aoelian = relative minor = A minor yes?

A minor would be

A B C D E F G
1 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7

Whereas the pentatonic is

A C D E G
1 b3 4 5 b7

Now the C blues scale would be..

C Eb F F# G A#
1 b3 4 b5 5 b7

Now I am as confused as potatoes.

But if I take C7, F7 and G7...

C7 = C E G A#

F7 = F C Eb A

G7 = G D F B

A A# B C

wait no this is making NO SENSE. I give up ?

@Evo. Thanks ? That is EXACTLY what I was looking for (basically). Modes are useless for an average player ? (Imo.)

cool so over C7 you play C D E F G A Bb C so C Mixolydian(key of F)
over F7 you play C D Eb F G A Bb C so C dorian(key of Bb)
over G7 you play C D E F G A B C so C Major

seriously try it with your pent licks in between... you'll be surprised.

C7 pent licks include major 3rd C Eb E F G Bb C
F7 pent licks include the major 6th C Eb F G A Bb C
G7 pent licks include the major 7th C Eb F G Bb B C
