hi ya anybody have any experience with using John pearce strings. they made for steel string acoustics.......... they made in USA and acording to the store owner are imported by hugh cummings of "Hugh's fine guitars" who again according to the music store owner is using them on his gorgeous vintage guitars when they need restringing ............
not that i want to use em myself but one of my students needed strings and i bought a set of the john pearce's on his behalf to try on the recommendation of the store owner ...... and i got em at a "great price as a " test/review set"
so anybody else here use em.......... i'm not interested in the publicity from the company themselves........... but hopefully some of you steel string players will have heard or used em...........
so trying to find 1st hand input

I've heard of them, but not used them. Maybe I should get a set from Hugh. But I tend to stick to Elixirs which I think are a good quality string and which last long enough to more than make up for the higher price.

They are made by Thomastik and were originally a steel string designed for nylon string guitars. Very low tension and quite popular with some fingerpickers.
They have since branched out into all kinds of strings, but I have no experience with those.

When I bought my Morgan from Hugh's it had a set of John Pearce Bluegrass' on... (basically for flatpicking)
If it's for a beginner then I think giving him a set is fine. They are, IMO, just as good/ bad as other makes of uncoated strings which fall in the same price class.
Personally I wouldn't bother with uncoated strings again...
Like Bob I'm a fan of Elixirs. ?

i found an interesting chat ...asking exactly the same question for ...people who had experience with john pearce.........NOT started by me ? on the international acoustic guitar forum
and found mostly highly favourable comments for the john pearce strings saying they have a noticeable tone difference and apparantly not a small one over the coated strings BUT they( the muso's answering) prefer the coated strings cos they last longer ...
one guy posted if he knew he had a special show coming up he would restring with john pearce for that show cos tonally he thought they excellent but for everyday use he also said he sweated a lot so prefered the longer life coated strings cos they protected his strings from the sweat.........
anyway lets see how this experiment develops...........
interesting side fact is that john pearce is a top english session muso ........ who initially designed a unique string with thomastik ( as alan mentioned) and even a nylon string for classical/flamenco guitars with a steel core and wrapped with nylon.which apparantly gives louder volume and clarity over traditional nylon........well i see these strings along with his whole collection are available online and thomastik still make a steel core nylon string .......interesting which apparantly has low enough tension that it does not damage a nylon string guitar like normal steels would but give the added volume ........ so yeah never tried em but the thomastik S series nylons are this........ also the thomastik john pearse nylon/steel is also still available...................
