Ive started an alternative rock project with a friend of mine, influences along the line of U2, Coldplay, Death Cab for Cutie etc. And one thing most these types of bands have in common is an epic sounding piano.

Now, my friend (plays piano) doesnt have a grand piano to slug around to every show, in fact he has a cheapy roland, but the saving grace is that it has a midi output that he plugs to his laptop and he can get some cool or should i say better sounding grand piano sounds. So my question is:

What would you recommend for soon to be gigging musicians to have a good sound, that is still affordable.

In terms of Keyboards, Laptops and programs?

He is using fruitlabs at the moment, which is hardly a industry standard, so what program would run the different plug-in's well, and also what kind of laptop would be needed to handle the specs, as with his current one there is a tad of latency!
If you want to go the MIDI/Laptop route then have a serious look at ArtVista Virtual Grand Piano as a plugin.

It will work as a standalone App on the Laptop and plays through Kontakt Player 2 or 3.

Depending where you get it the price is about R2000.00.

The sound is amazing and IMO worth the money spent.
