I have just imported a 1936 Gibson EH-150 guitar & amp set from the US. (No! - not from eBay). The amp is apparently still really sought after & working perfectly. I need to step from 220v to 120 to hear it. I don't want to change anything in the amp. The amp is only 120v. I thoght I would simply find a transformer online quickstix. So far, no luck.

Can anyone advise? There must be something out there.
    You need a step down transformer, they are a dime a dozed if you know where to look. Where are you based? Updating your profile helps us give you the info you need ?

    Cheers

      I think he said he lives in Cort Town.

      Erm, I mean, Cape Town...
        Profile sorted- BTW I'm in Cape Town
          Is the EH-150 guitar a lapsteel or wooden Hawaiian type guitar with a blade-or Charlie Christian PUP ?
            Hi Vic - Gibson made just 100 E-150's This was a cast aluminium & had the CC pup. It thought that a good many of these were melted down in WW2 for the aluminium shortage. You cab still pick up these online for about $3K. The EH-150 came after that - maple with the CC pup. It was in prod 1936 - 41.
            Dave Gilmour, The Stones & a few other have performed / recorded with these.

            EH = Electro Hawaiian
            150 = $150 for amp & guitar

            It was the first electric production Gibson & preceded the ES-150 (Electro-Spanish) that was made famous by Charlie C. The amp was the first Gibson amp. I picked up my set for $2600 (includes shipping).

            Gibson also made the EH-100 as a cheaper model - The pup wasn't a CC.

            Am I rambling? I do like this stuff.

              Ah! Thanks, that helps alot. A couple places, for something off the shelf try Communica in Woodstock or AC/DC dynamics in Montague Gardens, both keep stock, Communica will have Chinese imports, AC/DC build to spec in there workshop.

              Cheers

                Thanks for the info. All very interesting. We'll appreciate a few pics.... ?
                  Nice, but ... Why? Do you like the sound, playability, style, heritage, look? Or is it purely a collectors piece? I have never heard one or seen one so I have no context to place it in. Makes me really curious. Mind you, I would buy a vintage gibson tone knob if I stumble upon it and the price is right.? It just seems like thats a very specific guitar to search for and buy. So what gives?
                    Reason? - See my "hello" post.
                    -I really like the lap slide thing. It is is fully viable as a solo instrument.
                    -I'm a lefty - the bridge has no offset on lap steels
                    -These instruments are not priced in relation to their historcal significance & fretted instruments.
                    -I used to own a LH Gibson Sonex (from early 80's). Its probably in SA somewhere.

                    But anyway, I know what I like & what sound I want to fetch. I'll learn as I go. I think its the same for all of us anyway.
                    Look for these guys on youtube: Andrew Winton, Ben Harper, Bob Brozman, Christain Oyens for a sample.
                      Robert Randolph... Hendrix played sitting down! Super! Seen the dude live, no one since Jeff Healey came close ?
                        Aaaah, o.k. Read your introduction post now like I should've done in the first place and all is explained. :-S (btw, Welcome!)

                          He is great, caught him a festival in Atlanta 2 years ago with the Mrs and couple friends, we had fun, he blew me away, triple bill with Jars of Clay and Third Day, 2 great gospel acts.

                          Cheers

                            Hey lapdawg, my buddy's going to lend me the '60s Gibson (which has a firebird pickup) so that we can do a duet with me on the lap steel. You know a good place to start for learning lap steel? You tube videos or instructional websites?

                              Buy the instructionals: I rate Bob Brozman widely believed to be the best(or one of). I got his 2 blues ones (into & advanced) online. He covers a lot & gives nice coverage of the blues styles thru the years. I got the pair for $40 + couple bucks postage. Do it. The DVD's are just great entertainment anyway. I reckon just the 1st disc could keep you busy for a while. Its 100min. Its a good place to start - even if you want to do more rock style later. Go to http://elderly.com/search/elderly?terms=bob+brozman+dvd&x=0&y=0 scroll down.

                              The thing is that in SA we do not know a lot about slide technique & styles so I would definitely say you should begin with an instructional.
                                Cool thanks. I'll definitely consider it. Blues and Hawaiian would be my main interests there anyway.
                                  Beautiful, huh Vic? Quilted top and everything. Classic Gibson sunburst so nicely applied.

                                  If lapsteel ever really gets big again the value of these things will soar.
