That's a very handy tip. This is a little embarrassing, but I had the same problem and I just wrapped a scarf around my earphones and it worked. I look a little deranged, but I suppose it helps keep people away while I'm busy.
True story. Was doing a session my old band years ago and the drummer was playing so loud he couldn't hear the click. Unlike Alan's suggestion, it wasn't that he was in time, and the moment it got to a level he could hear (ear-piercing), it bled through the cans. Solution? A big think beanie over the cans and gaffa taped round to keep 'em on while he was playing. Somewhere there are photos he'll pay me to keep to myself...
