@Alan - wow. There have been simpler Ph.Ds written in electronics I'm sure HAHA, very cool stuff. I'm just a guitar -> amp guy, I don't even own a wah!
+1.. man, I didn't understand any of that! ?

:-[ Sorry! Here's the simple version: I fiddled with the knobs until it sounded OK. ?

The LFO idea is especially intriguing, I've just recently started fiddling with synths enough to know what that even stands for lol.

+1 to Doc Phil - best combo of consistently interesting, exciting, catchy tune with excellent execution. And I'm hardly a metal fan. Nice one. Like a jolt of espresso.

Shot singemonkey... thanks for the kind words ?

For once... I enjoyed every single entry... and very worthwhile of all being in category A... (i apologise if it sounded bad). Everyone's sound is awesome so I'm not going to mention it in the rest of the post.
BMU ... very well done dude! A true waltz at high speed on crack and shrooms with a bit of ecstacy for flavour. Gothenburg will be very proud. In Flames mixed with At the Gates.
Bob ... awesome track dude... waiting at the crossroads on a heavy rainy day and the damn demon is having tea and taking its time about it.
Warren ... A very beautiful song... your daughter will be very happy when she's in her teens and realises how much a daddy's girl she is when she listens to this track again. Well done man!
Alan ... I love the combination of the first two tracks... the ebow (without reading the effects used) sounded like a heavy phaser... the od on it though was very thin and metallic sounding. But, nonetheless, this track is great. The feel for me is superb... 60's rhythm with 70's feel on top... the good ol jam days of southern rock awesomeness. Well done dude.
Doc ... Thrash... Old school thrash... WOOOOOHOOOOOOOOO!!!! Great riff dude... nice and tight like a woodpecker.
Do we get two votes or just one?

I dig them all (though I'm not sure all qualify for 3/4).
Alan, that was clearly a throwaway from Adore (Smashing Pumpkins) that you fished out of the bin, hahahahaha!

Just a thought. I have been mulling this over for a while (this happens on international air flights): I'm not sure that all of these entries are in 3/4. Even if we extend it to allow complex time signatures like 6/4 or 12/8 that you can sort of count in threes then I STILL don't think they all qualify.
The challenges are always within specific constraints. If we ignore those constraints then it might as well be a fortnightly challenge of whatever we feel like putting down, which, for me, negates a large chunk of what the challenge is about. When you write a sonnet it's so many lines. When you write a limerick it's 5 lines, a certain meter and a specific rhyming scheme. When you write a haiku you have a fixed number of syllables at your disposal. The challenge is to refine your idea to fit into the format. You can't have a verse with 6 lines and call it a limerick (or a sonnet for that matter).
Where do we stand on this? My entry is too long actually. At some point we have to draw lines around the challenge and allow no crossing or else it starts losing value.
Warren
I think the rules should be adhered to, I agree.
Is there any chance of talking candidly about which ones do not qualify? So that we can understand where the problem might be?

Rene does obviously have the issue of wanting as many entries as possible. So, like any small group, there's a lot of flexibility. People should obviously try to stick to the rules, but it'd be kind of hard to throw people out for infractions of the structure if the intent is good, don't you think?

I agree with many entries being more listenable... and it may not have been the waltz but 3/4 is still a good contender for many things musical... I think all the entries deserved to be there and it was the interpretation that counts in the end.
Writing a metal track in 3/4? That is not very easy to do... especially thrash... regarding the other tracks... a guy could accent different parts and it wont sound in 3/4 at all.
Fair is fair though... so if you want to "enforce" the rules... possibly be prepared for far fewer entries.

This is tricky! I think the rules must be adhered to especially if there is a restriction in the competition.
e.g. If the challenge is : Any type of blues played on a single guitar with no other instruments
We cannot just accept an entry of 1 guitar and a Jewish Harp just because the intent is good
If the comp says 3/4 timing, and all the entries should be in that timing. IMO
evolucian
Ok... so who was not in 3/4?
edit: seeing as I haven't cast my vote yet... it would be nice to know who is "eliminated for bad conduct"
Squonk
@ EVO
I am not judging this weeks contestants at all, I am stating my view on the competition rules.
The reason I didn't enter this week is because I have no clue what 3/4 timing is unless I hear a waltz in there somewhere ?
And it's all friendly as well, but if the comp is vague like "Alternate Tuning" , it's pretty open, but if there is a restriction like Alan had once where we had to do picking on a guitar with just one track, we should adhere to that restriction.

Been thinking about this a bit, and I think that's part of the hassle with this week's challenge.
I took my cue from Bob's list of stuff he considered to be in 3/4, e.g. Piano Man and HotRS. On a side note, I personally wouldn't count either of those in strict 3/4 (HotRS's Wikipedia entry calls it 6/8 I think). But Bob later stated that, regardless, you should be counting in threes.
That leaves the goal-posts pretty wide apart.
evolucian
but it now is open... Bob thought ot all the entries were 3/4... so... which are to be eliminated?

I've been biting my tongue over the 6/8 and combo 6/8 & 4/4 entries. I don't think it's worth making a fuss about it now, we'll be stricter in future.
The two are closely related, but their grouping is different. 3/4 is grouped so that you have 3 sets of 2 eighth notes, like this: || || || (three beats per measure), whereas 6/8 is 2 sets of 3 eighth notes: ||| ||| (two beats per measure). It can also be viewed from an accenting viewpoint - 3/4 has only a primary accent, while 6/8 has both a primary and a secondary accent. From a more technical perspective, a very important thing is that 3/4 is a simple time signature, while 6/8 is a compound.
Faster music is almost always notated as 6/8 rather than 3/4 - firstly because that is the way it is perceived and secondly because it's easier to notate and read.
Longer or shorter times by up to 20 seconds or so, I'm willing to let slide, not the least to accommodate fadeouts, etc. You wouldn't get away with it writing jingles, where frame level accuracy is required, but I figure it's OK for comps.

So if I look at the drum accents, my entry would actually be 6/8, correct?

A perfect example, yes. ?

Ok I have listened to all the entries again One entry does seems to slip out of the time signature constaints and went a bit pear shaped however the vote tally quite accurately reflects which one that is. I have had many entries in these challenges that I personally think did not quite fit the mandate or are submitted late or have too many tracks or are too long. I don not even listen to the entries before they are posted because I would then have to recuse myself from entering. I remain objective and do not decide which entries satisfy the topic's criteria. The members who vote for the entries do that job well enough thank you. 8)
