Why should Cape Town have all the Good Music???

After performing at a couple of open mic sessions at TJ's, I decided to investigate Open Mic Clubs in RSA. Using you favourite Internet Search engine, populate the search criteria with "Open Mic" and restrict to a South African search, you will discover that most of the Open Mic clubs/venues are in the Cape. I also did a search on Guitar Tuition, Schools etc and found that Cape Town is number one again! What is this thing called 'Cape Town'???? ?

One venue you should consider is Andy McGibbon's monthly acoustic music forum. Small venue. Seating. A good standard of player. Decent grub available.

OK... I won't be around for the next one, so note that it's the LAST WEDNESDAY of the month. It's at Old Parks club, right across the road from Andy's shop. If you pop into the shot they can put you on their contact list and you'll get an SMS reminder.

The food there is WAY better than at TJs.

OK... I'll be out the country when the next TJs open mic night comes around. So please note that it's the LAST Thursday of the month. Still at Marks Park, but in a smaller room. The guys on the gate at the main entrance will direct you to whichever room is being used. You need to take an acoustic guitar, preferably one with a pick up in it but they can mike you up if need be. They provide the PA, mics etc. Usually you will get a maximum of 15 minutes to perform.

I dont know. Maybe the people in Joburg/PTA dont like to leave their things at home and go out. With all alarms etc I've been whacked a few times hey. So it's OK to be at home becasue once it happened when I was home and managed to corner a straggler and it was a very warm spiritual experience but I've still got a bit of trouble for it. A while back there was a chic here in Benoni who had an open mic going and I was stalking it but then it disappeared from the local rag and I guess I should give her a call and ask what's up.

Correct. There was a club in Benoni. We had a few of them pop up at TJs in an attempt to foster links between the two setups. One of the guys, Ernie Stark, still pops up at TJs from time to time, but it's not round the corner for him like it is for me (OK... round TWO corners for me and then there's the driveway at Marks Park, but you know what I mean).

I can also tell you that there are plans to open up a folk/acoustic music club in White River.

Is that closer than Jo'burg for you Ray?

when i lived in jhb i had a really popular open mic running for almost a year but now i'm in pta i was thinking of starting something similar . but with me it's a time issue ....as i teach a few evening a and perform a few evening a week so it leaves me with only one off day at moment ........ but it is in the pipeline ... i was thinking of doing it at sinkhuis but they closed .... ahhhhhhhh cos it's close to me....... but no use crying over spilt milk ....... anyway it's definitely on the cards for the future........... lets just let the world cup pass (venues are all gagga over that for next month so the chances of getting the venues is less..and i won't have football on in background while i host an open mic ........) but i'm definetly gonna do it sometime again........ so ...watch this space..........

It's in Mpumalanga. Much closer to the the Kruger Park than to Krugersdrorp.

Bob Dubery(yes thats X-rated Bob from forum ) / Marcia Moon (who has just released a cd ) /Karryn & Tash (an amazing alternative acoustic /electric act who perform on Jhb original music circuit) and myself , Keira Witherkay with my vibrant mix of percussion and acoustic instrumental world music ..

Besides some open mic, Durban just get's left in the "guitar case" for some reason, I mean My Coke Fest for an example was only in JHB & CPT the last two times....and if you look a all the SA bands that play in Gauteng and Cape Town on a regular basis almost never play here... >☹ WHOOOOHOOOO, LET'S GO WATCH KARAOKE!

Today that rusty organism that I call my brain suddenly creaked into action, and I remembered that there's an open mic evening running at the Radium Beer Hall in Orange Grove. With the proviso that performers have to perform their own works - which will not trouble the talented likes of Squonk at all.

They also have the best steaks in the whole of Jozi and, I'm reliably informed, excellent seafood.

Dude, you just have to keep your ear on the ground.

For example, The BLK JKS, one of SA's best bands played in Pinetown last Thursday, but in the most obscure location. They were awesome though!
