I really like this, although I'd switch the "pop" type clicks for something a little more "tick-tock-ish" if that makes sense.
It does. Thanks. I might have considered getting some bits of wood and a wooden spoon out, but I don't have any mics so couldn't do that. I used the click track to get the clockwork feel. In fact originally I had the click track in 4/4 time. This didn't work as well as a "tick tock" because there were three different clicks in each bar. So towards the end I added a click track in 2/4 time and for double the number of bars, which gave a more clockwork feel.
What I LOVE about this track is your incorporation, at about 0:26, of that grandfather clock-type harmonic chime melody (I don't know if that's what it's called, but that's how I think of it). This reminded me immediately of sitting in my gran's old lounge as a kid, listening to her clock make the tune...this was a really clever little touch. ? You got my vote!
Thanks.
That's exactly what it's meant to be - the hour chimes of an old fashioned clock. A grandfather clock or a church tower clock. Getting the basic "melody" of that was easy enough. The harmonies took a little more work. One of the notes required was a C, so I capoed the guitar at the first fret to give me a C harmonic at the octave on the 2nd string. Then I had to "drop" the necessary notes in on the right beats.
Conceptually those chimes were one of the first things to get fixed. That really lead me to the clockwork/tick tock theme. I'd thought about taking the click track out. Then I thought about having it mostly out but just fading it back up under the chimes. Eventually I decided that I liked the "tick tock" feel.
The final chimes were all done on the Morgan. Initially I'd done about 3/4 of the guitar parts on the Morgan and the rest on the Smoothtalker. Then at mix time I found a whole lot of noise on some of the tracks. This seemed to have leaked into a cable somewhere from my cellphone. I could tidy some of it up but there were parts that I had to re-record. Including the chimes. I think there's not much of the Smoothtalker left in there now.
This probably took me about 2.5 times as long as it should have - but I was on a learning curve here, and hopefully I will not make the same mistakes again.
