So, I haven't actually had my guitar with me the past couple days, it's been at church. But, when i got it today, i looked at what it was and did some googling. It's a Yamaha FG 355SB.. The couple places I found it online, seemed to indicate that it's not a very expensive guitar.
Now I know that price isn't everything and it doesn't matter, etc. However, is it worth plugging 3-4k worth of pickups into a guitar that isn't worth that much? Just wondering?
1) You started off by saying that you really like the Yamaha, that it does the business. So who says the guitar isn't worth spending the money on?
2) OK, you like the guitar and it sounds great but you don't want to over-capitalise because it's market value isn't great. So get one of the Baggs kits that can be removed. You can salvage all that kit for reuse and refitting to another guitar.
3) You don't HAVE to spend 3 to 4 K on electronics. That's a figure for the top of a range system. Something like an I-Beam or an Active Element isn't, it's true, going to cost your 50 bucks, but it also isn't going to cost your R3-4K (not unless somebody somewhere is making themselves a very attractive markup).
Best course of action for you, I think, is to go to some shops and play some kit. Play it plugged in and ask what system was fitted at the factory. Play it unplugged and try to evaluate it against your current guitar. Think about what sort of Baggs or Fishman system would suit you (and your budget). Get a quote. Find out if the system can be removed without leaving major scars.
Shop. Consider. Decide.
