SO this is one of four videos from a bbc documentary
I think he is a super cool guitarist and simple, I saw them back a few years ago and it was mind blowing
Awesome vid, Mika. Loved the Spinal Tap reference (that the interviewer missed). Loved his guitar tech. He's like a guitar butler. I want a guitar butler. It's like the Edge's rig is too complicated to keep track of, so he's got his guitar batman to keep it all straight.
Either I got this very wrong, or the "little lesson" amounts to "have lots of free time. Have lots of money to buy lots of gear (or let the FX companies give it to you). Have a couple of roadies. Have lots of time for experimenting to find the one good thing each pedal does. Then fart around until you get some inspiration."
I'm sure it works for him, but I can't quite see the relevance to my world.
I can relate to how exposure to different sounds can often trigger a composition.
I think it's great that he has an array of tools available to him.
For the type of music he is composing, arranging and playing he needs access to these tools however he can get them.
Through his success, he is able to employ a tech assistant which is also great. You'll probably find that the 'butler' is a damned good guitarist in his own right.
To me, technical development is cool. Imagine how static music would have been if the piano hadn't been developed, or that the saxophone had been rejected by the composers of the day.
For me, music, like all the arts, is dependent upon progression.
So, I say, bring on the effects even if 90% of them might not work or have little or no practical application.
Ever study cultures or others cultures in school? Well theres the lessons there, its The edges take on his guitar setup. I could nt use all those effects, I like to be far simpler. But we can all enjoy the look into anothers culture.
But that guitar butler is so cool ? ? ? ? I would make him bring me a new guitar every song, no wait I would change between every chorus and verse. I would also demand he give me piggy backs to my shows.
I have thought long and hard about trying to adopt a little mexican or vietnamese boy to carry my 5 or 6 pedal board to shows and tune my guitar, sadly I fear to train him may take me more time than i want.
