hi ya all, and thanks for all the support vincent is getting........
as for 1st lesson, thats now done, we connected well, and i taught him some basic theory which he snapped up and learnt
very quickly, he has a wicked sense of humour ........ and teaching him is fun, basically it's starting at scratch, but he has the will to learn , and thats what counts........ so i believe we will be having fun in next few weeks, i have put him in my diary every thurs for an hour ....
his motor skills will be a problem cos he only has 100% mobility and control in 2 fingers on his left hand and about 70% in his ring finger and only about 20% in his pinky....... when i gave him a chromatic excercise to help loosen his hand he teased me that i was now doing the physio's job for her........ he's very sharp......
and thanks again to Bob for setting this all up , and donating a tuner and organising strings which we will get by next lesson

Please keep us posted, Keira, I'd love to know how it goes. Where did you learn your African music? Is it mosty spirituals or traditional? Hope the lessons go well.
oh and yeah viccy i know mostly african jazz.....
i'm old enough to have unfortunately grown up in the dark apartheid days when classical music was all they taught in university ....
so i studied jazz at private music schools here (by private i don't mean posh ... but schools that taught jazz and were not sanctioned by the government of the time cos they had black tutors and students were of all races...so quite revolutionary for 80's ..... what a horrid past we lived though )
and back in 80's my tutors were not recognised in SA but they were all playing the international jazz scene and touring abroud at major festivals many anti apartheid ones too, so even after i studied i found myself on the touring circuit i often worked with black musicians cos they all knew me from the bad old days ,
and with that background i picked up enough of the african style that i even compose original african tunes and perform them live and i know a lot of the african jazz standards ...so i understand the style and the feel,
HOWEVER i'm not that i'm an expert on african styles in total but like with my other genres, i know enough to play it authentically, and travelling around the world helped a lot too.... i've lived in some exotic places and mingled musically with many cultures
